Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Becomes Youngest Orange Cap Winner in IPL History
Historic Achievement for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India] - Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has made history by becoming the youngest player to win the Orange Cap in the Indian Premier League (IPL), following the early exits of Gujarat Titans (GT) openers Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan during the final against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Sunday.
At merely 15 years and 65 days, Sooryavanshi has set a new record as the youngest recipient of the Orange Cap. The previous record was held by Sudharsan, who won it at 23 years and 231 days in 2025, while Gill had set the record in 2023 at 23 years and 263 days.
Throughout the season, the Bihar-born prodigy showcased his talent by scoring 776 runs across 16 matches, boasting an impressive strike rate of 237.31. He also hit 72 sixes, breaking Chris Gayle's long-standing record of 59 sixes in a single IPL season.
The IPL Governing Council is anticipated to officially acknowledge this achievement following the final match between RCB and Gujarat at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
With the Rajasthan Royals (RR) eliminated after their loss to Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2, Sooryavanshi concluded the season with a significant lead.
Despite Shubman Gill's century in the chase against Gujarat, he could not surpass Sooryavanshi, as he was dismissed for just 10 runs in the final against RCB.
Sai Sudharsan, last year's Orange Cap holder, was also in the running but fell short with only 12 runs. With both GT openers dismissed early, no player could catch up to Sooryavanshi. Even Virat Kohli, who finished fifth with 600 runs, needed an unlikely 177 runs in the final to close the gap.
Sooryavanshi's remarkable season included 776 runs at a strike rate of 237.31, with 72 sixes, surpassing Chris Gayle's previous record.
He narrowly missed equaling Virat Kohli's record of four centuries in a season, having been dismissed in the nineties three times—93 against Lucknow Super Giants, 97 in the Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad, and 96 in Qualifier 2 against Gujarat Titans—alongside his century against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Additionally, Sooryavanshi reached the milestone of 1,000 IPL runs in record time, taking just 440 balls, surpassing West Indies legend Andre Russell. He became the second fastest to achieve this in 23 innings, with Shaun Marsh holding the record at 21 innings.
His explosive performances have made him one of the most discussed young cricketers in India, with many considering him a future star across all formats.
