UPT20 League's Impact on Young Talent and Economy

Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], August 20: Sanjay Kapoor, the Chairman of the UPT20 League Governing Council, emphasized that the league has become a vital platform for emerging cricketers, especially those hailing from smaller towns, while also playing a significant role in the economic development of the state.

The inaugural season kicked off in September 2023, showcasing a mix of local talents alongside international and state-level players, making it a key scouting ground for the Indian Premier League (IPL).

In an interview, Kapoor noted that the league's influence extends beyond cricket, offering opportunities for youth and contributing to the state's economic landscape.

“This initiative is not solely about cricket; it encompasses the overall development of the youth. As we witness the evolution of our young population, it’s evident that the economy is also on the rise,” Kapoor remarked.

He mentioned that the UPT20 League, established under the guidance of BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla, has significantly increased its viewership and reach.

Kapoor pointed out that currently, 17 players from the league are participating in the IPL, expressing optimism that more players from Uttar Pradesh will reach the highest levels of the sport.

“Seventeen players are now in the IPL, and I believe that in the future, a substantial portion of the IPL roster will be filled with talent from UP, given that we are the largest state in India with abundant talent,” he stated.

According to Kapoor, the UPT20 League has achieved over 100 million views this year, highlighting its growing popularity among cricket enthusiasts.

“Under Rajeev Shukla's leadership, UPT20 has seen a remarkable increase in viewership, surpassing 100 million this year, which is unmatched by any other league,” he added.

He also highlighted the exposure the league offers to players from smaller cities, providing them with facilities and broadcasting opportunities comparable to those in the IPL.

“The matches are broadcast on Star Sports, Jio Live, and FanCode, offering top-notch facilities akin to those in the IPL,” he explained.

Kapoor noted that the Uttar Pradesh government supports the league, with the Chief Minister and other officials attending matches to motivate young athletes.

He mentioned that one of Rajeev Shukla's primary goals is to elevate talented players who might otherwise miss out on opportunities.

“His vision is to spotlight players who struggle to gain recognition. This is a transformative moment for them,” Kapoor said.

Regarding the potential launch of a women's T20 league in Uttar Pradesh, Kapoor indicated that the UPCA is considering the idea but will proceed only after thorough planning and consultation with its Apex Council.

“Rajeev Shukla has a comprehensive vision. We do not rush into decisions without proper groundwork. We will act when we are fully prepared,” he stated.

Looking forward, Kapoor expressed the UPCA's ambition to position the UPT20 League as one of the premier domestic T20 competitions in the country, second only to the IPL.

“We aim to uphold our status as the largest league after the IPL and maintain that standard over time,” he concluded.

Kapoor also forecasted a significant increase in viewership for this season, noting that the tournament has already exceeded its previous opening-day figures.

“This year, we expect the viewership for the UPT20 League to triple, if not quadruple. We have already surpassed the opening day numbers from last season. UPT20 is gaining traction across India, setting a benchmark for other leagues,” he remarked.
