Understanding the Role of a Finisher

Tim David recognizes the challenges of consistently performing as a finisher in cricket. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru player has accepted that it's crucial not to judge oneself too harshly during tough times.

His powerful batting in the lower order was instrumental in RCB securing their first IPL title last year, and he continues to showcase his explosive hitting in the current season.

"In T20 cricket, as a middle-order batsman, it's unrealistic to expect to finish every game successfully. If you set that expectation, it becomes quite challenging. Therefore, we focus on enjoying the game," David shared during a media interaction.

"A significant aspect of the IPL is to avoid placing unnecessary pressure on yourself and being overly critical when things don’t go your way," he added.

Credit to the Top Order

David expressed gratitude towards RCB's top-order batsmen for easing the pressure on lower-order players like himself, Romario Shepherd, and Jitesh Sharma.

"As a middle-order batsman, my role is to solve problems. We're fortunate to have a strong top order that consistently puts us in advantageous positions," he noted.

"Often, I find myself just finishing off the innings, and with players like Jitesh and Romario, the pressure is significantly reduced for us," he explained.

Experience and Preparation

Drawing from his extensive experience in the middle order, David emphasizes the importance of practice sessions to excel in crucial moments.

"Having spent my entire career batting in the middle order, I understand the risks involved. However, it's essential to get enough practice since you don’t always get to bat in matches," he stated.

"You need to be adept at hitting yorkers and finding ways to score against various bowlers. After years of playing, you start to recognize the patterns bowlers use to slow you down," he added.

Improving Against Spin

David's dedicated practice has enhanced his ability to face spin bowlers, a skill he believes is vital for his success in the IPL.

"I've always felt more comfortable against spin than pace, but playing in India presents a unique challenge as you face some of the best spinners in the game. In my role, I typically come in during the final overs against the opposition's top spinners," he remarked.

"I wasn't satisfied with my performance against spin, so I reevaluated my approach with my coach, Jim Allenby, to make some technical adjustments," he explained.

Putting Pressure on Spinners

Beyond technical adjustments, David believes that applying pressure on spinners is the most effective strategy.

"I perform best when I rely on my instincts. If a bowler delivers a perfect ball, I respect that, but if they miss their mark, I aim to capitalize on it, which puts them under pressure," he said.

"Spin bowling becomes challenging when the bowler senses pressure. If they bowl to a hesitant batter, they can control the game. However, if they miss their length and the batter hits a six, that can be intimidating for the bowler," he concluded.
