Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 6: Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina has expressed admiration for Shreyas Iyer's leadership, describing him as a "fearless captain."
These comments come just before the Punjab Kings (PBKS) are set to face off against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) today at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad during the IPL 2026.
Under Iyer's captaincy, PBKS has performed admirably this season, securing six victories out of nine matches, with two losses and one game resulting in no result. Iyer has not only led the team effectively but has also been a key player, amassing 328 runs in eight innings at an impressive average of 54.67.
Iyer's leadership has shone through across various franchises. He guided the Delhi Capitals to the IPL 2020 finals, led the Kolkata Knight Riders to victory in 2024, and took the Punjab Kings to the finals in 2025. Currently, in 2026, PBKS appears poised to reach the playoffs.
During an interview on JioStar, Raina praised Iyer for his impactful and fearless captaincy, noting his unique approach to each team he leads. He emphasized Iyer's effective communication skills, his support for players, and his confident demeanor.
Raina drew parallels between Iyer and former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin, stating that Iyer's blend of calmness and decisive action instills confidence and encourages an aggressive team strategy.
"Wherever he has played, he has introduced a new style of cricket. His fearless leadership has been evident, whether with Delhi, KKR, or Punjab, who reached the finals last year after an 11-year hiatus. His off-field communication is exceptional," Raina remarked.
"He supports his players, and his confident body language reminds me of Azhar bhai. When Mohammad Azharuddin was captain, the players around him exuded a different level of confidence. Each leader has a unique style, and with Shreyas, you witness both composure and bold decision-making. When Punjab bats, they adopt an all-out attacking strategy, which is also reflected in their bowling," he added.
