Sunrisers Hyderabad Secures First IPL Victory Against Kolkata Knight Riders
Sunrisers Hyderabad Triumphs Over Kolkata Knight Riders
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], April 2: Sunrisers Hyderabad delivered a stellar performance, marked by explosive innings from Heinrich Klaasen and Abhishek Sharma, alongside impressive bowling from Jaydev Unadkat, Eshan Malinga, and Nitish Kumar Reddy. This led to their inaugural victory in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL), defeating Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 65 runs on Thursday.
After being asked to bat first, SRH set a formidable target of 226/8. Klaasen scored 52 runs off 35 balls, while Abhishek Sharma contributed 48 runs from just 21 balls, and Nitish Kumar Reddy added 39 runs off 24 balls. KKR began their chase with promising starts from Finn Allen (28 runs off 7 balls) and Angkrish Raghuvanshi (52 runs off 29 balls), but ultimately collapsed, getting bowled out for 161 runs in 16 overs.
Finn Allen ignited the innings by smashing David Payne for 25 runs in the opening over, hitting three fours and two sixes. However, he was dismissed shortly after, leaving KKR at 29/1 in just 1.3 overs.
Raghuvanshi continued to score freely, reaching the 50-run mark in just 3.2 overs. Unfortunately, KKR's momentum was disrupted when captain Ajinkya Rahane fell to Unadkat, caught by Eshan Malinga, leaving the team at 67/2.
The power play ended poorly for KKR, with Cameron Green run out for just two runs, concluding the first six overs at 74/3. Raghuvanshi and Rinku Singh managed to stabilize the innings, bringing the score to 100 runs in 8.5 overs. Raghuvanshi reached his half-century in 27 balls, but his dismissal for 52 runs marked the beginning of KKR's downfall.
Following Raghuvanshi's exit, KKR struggled to maintain their innings, losing several wickets in quick succession, including Rinku Singh (35 runs) and Sunil Narine (12 runs). Ultimately, KKR was all out for 161 runs, with Unadkat claiming three wickets for 21 runs.
Earlier, SRH's innings was bolstered by a brilliant half-century from Klaasen and significant contributions from Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, who helped set a challenging total. The opening pair of Head and Sharma quickly amassed 22 runs in the first two overs, with Sharma hitting a remarkable 25 runs off Varun Chakaravarthy in the fifth over.
Despite losing Head for 46 runs, SRH maintained a strong position, finishing the power play at 84/1. Klaasen's innings of 52 runs off 35 balls, along with Reddy's contributions, ensured SRH reached a total of 226/8. KKR's Blessing Muzarabani took four wickets but could not prevent the defeat.
Brief Scores: SRH: 226/8 (Heinrich Klaasen 52, Nitish Kumar Reddy 39, Blessing Muzarabani 4/41) defeated KKR: 161 in 16 overs (Angkrish Raghuvanshi 52, Rinku Singh 35, Jaydev Unadkat 3/21).
