Sunrisers Hyderabad Coach Calls for Adaptation After IPL Loss to Mumbai Indians
Vettori Emphasizes Need for Tactical Adjustments
Following a challenging match against the Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad's coach, Daniel Vettori, urged his players to modify their strategies on difficult pitches. He emphasized that they cannot rely on favorable conditions at every venue and must elevate their performance after being outplayed by a skilled Mumbai team.
The Mumbai Indians showcased an impressive performance on a challenging Wankhede Stadium pitch, which offered assistance for both spin and pace, ultimately securing a four-wicket victory.
Struggling to find their rhythm, SRH managed to score only 162 runs for five wickets. The MI bowlers, particularly right-arm off-spinner Will Jacks, who took 2 wickets for just 14 runs, played a crucial role in their triumph.
Vettori expressed that the unpredictability of pitch conditions adds an element of luck, stating, 'No one really has control over their surface, so there’s a little bit of luck involved in terms of coming up against wickets that don’t suit us.' This loss marked another away game defeat for SRH in this IPL season.
Despite having power hitters like Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Heinrich Klaasen, Ishan Kishan, and Nitish Reddy, only Abhishek (40 runs off 28 balls) and Klaasen (37 runs off 28 balls) made significant contributions.
Vettori acknowledged the need for his team to adapt to varying conditions, noting, 'We’re not expecting to go around the country and come up on belters, so the ball’s in our court to realize that.'
He highlighted the effectiveness of MI's bowlers, particularly during the middle overs, which made it extremely challenging for SRH batters.
Vettori remarked, 'It was just incredibly tough through those middle stages,' and praised Mumbai's ability to read the conditions well, particularly their use of slow balls, executed by bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult.
Jacks, who contributed 36 runs alongside his bowling performance, acknowledged the pitch's difficulties but affirmed that their game plan was clear. He stated, 'It was not what we’ve seen in the past here, but it was definitely still a good wicket.'
He also mentioned that MI spinner Karn Sharma sustained a finger injury during the match, hoping it wouldn't be serious.
Jacks concluded that the pitch remained consistent throughout the game, with SRH struggling to make contact while MI adapted well to the conditions.
