Sunil Gavaskar Supports David Miller's Decision in IPL Thriller Against Gujarat Titans
Gavaskar Backs Miller's Intent in IPL Match
Sunil Gavaskar, the former captain of India, has come to the defense of David Miller, a batter for the Delhi Capitals, regarding his decision not to take a single during a nail-biting IPL match against the Gujarat Titans. Gavaskar emphasized that Miller's intent should not be criticized.
With two runs needed from the last two balls to reach a target of 211, Miller opted against taking a single from Prasidh Krishna's delivery on the second-to-last ball. He missed the final ball but attempted a run. Unfortunately, Kuldeep Yadav, who was at the other end, could not evade Jos Buttler's direct hit after both batters had crossed.
Gavaskar remarked, "David Miller was confident in his abilities, having been in good form, and believed he could finish the game. You can't fault that kind of intent. Ultimately, it came down to execution; Prasidh Krishna bowled an excellent slower bouncer at the perfect height, making it challenging. These moments are defined by very fine margins in high-pressure situations," during his commentary on 'JioHotstar'.
He further noted the importance of game awareness in tense moments, recalling how former India coach Ravi Shastri demonstrated this during the tied Test against Australia in 1986.
In that historic match in Chennai, while chasing 348, Shastri displayed remarkable composure, scoring an unbeaten 48 and crucially taking a single at the right time, allowing India to tie the game at 347 before the last batter, Maninder Singh, was dismissed without scoring.
Gavaskar added, "This highlights the significance of game awareness. It reminds me of Ravi Shastri's decision in that tied Test against Australia in 1986 when he took a single at a critical moment to level the scores."
Reflecting on the recent match, he suggested that, in hindsight, Miller might have benefited from taking a single, especially after Kuldeep Yadav had successfully done so earlier.
Kevin Pietersen, a former England cricketer, praised Rashid Khan for his crucial contribution to the Gujarat Titans' thrilling victory, where the Afghanistan all-rounder took three wickets while conceding only 17 runs in his four overs, marking GT's first win of the season.
However, Pietersen expressed concerns about the overall performance of the Gujarat Titans' bowling attack, stating, "Rashid Khan was exceptional. It's great to see him nearing his best form, as he holds himself to high standards."
He added, "That said, I believe the Gujarat Titans' bowling unit as a whole was not at its peak, and they struggled to close out the game effectively. But that's the nature of cricket; you will encounter more challenging days than successful ones."
