Shubman Gill's IPL 2026 Opportunity: A Chance to Shine After T20 World Cup Snub
Pujara Highlights Gill's Potential in IPL 2026
As the IPL 2026 season approaches, former Indian cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara has expressed that Shubman Gill, captain of the Gujarat Titans, could channel his exclusion from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup squad into a driving force for success in the upcoming tournament.
During a discussion on JioHotstar, Pujara praised Gill as a "top-notch player capable of excelling in all formats" and suggested that a standout performance in IPL could lead to his reinstatement in the T20I team.
Pujara remarked, "The disappointment of missing out on the T20 World Cup will undoubtedly motivate Shubman Gill. He is a versatile player who can thrive in all formats. A successful IPL 2026 could certainly secure his spot back in the T20I lineup. He is already leading in Tests and captaining in ODIs, showcasing his multi-format capabilities. A strong season will keep him in contention for the national team."
Pressure and Opportunity for Gill
Acknowledging the pressure Gill may face due to his absence from the T20 World Cup squad, Pujara emphasized that the IPL serves as an excellent platform for him to showcase his skills across formats. He advised Gill to "increase his scoring rate" in the T20 format, aiming for a strike rate between 150 and 160.
"There will be some expectations on him since he hasn't been part of the Indian T20 setup. However, this is a fantastic chance for him to continue his impressive batting. He needs to focus on accelerating his game, which is something he has been working on. This IPL season is crucial for him to demonstrate that he can maintain a strike rate of 150 to 160," Pujara added.
Gujarat Titans: Title Contenders
When discussing why the Gujarat Titans are strong contenders for the title this season, Pujara highlighted their formidable top order, featuring Captain Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler, noting their remarkable consistency as a key strength.
"GT appears to be a favorite for the title this year. Their top order, consisting of Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler, is exceptional. You can't ask for a better trio. These players have consistently scored runs, which is their main advantage," he stated.
Key Players and Bowling Strength
Pujara also pointed out Rahul Tewatia as a crucial finisher and Shahrukh Khan as a player who could significantly impact the team's performance if he reaches his potential.
"The depth of all-rounders, especially with Jason Holder's addition, enhances their strength. Holder is in excellent form with both bat and ball and will be eager to contribute in both areas. Tewatia will serve as their primary finisher, while Shahrukh Khan is another vital player. If he performs to his capabilities, GT will transform into a formidable team," Pujara explained.
On the bowling side, Pujara identified GT's seamers as their greatest asset, mentioning Kagiso Rabada, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna, along with support from Ishant Sharma, Ashok Sharma, and left-arm bowler Luke Wood. He noted that Holder's bowling skills add further depth to their lineup.
"In terms of bowling, their seamers are their strength. Kagiso Rabada, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna are their leading pacers, with Ishant Sharma available if needed. Ashok Sharma will bring his fiery pace into play during the season. Luke Wood is another seamer who knows how to perform well. If Rabada struggles, Wood can step in. However, I hope Rabada, being a strike bowler, has a successful IPL. All GT fans will be hoping for the same," Pujara concluded.
