Shubman Gill Joins Elite IPL Ranks with Stellar Performance Against KKR
Gill's Remarkable Achievement in IPL
In Kolkata, Gujarat Titans' captain Shubman Gill has made headlines by joining the ranks of cricketing legends such as David Warner, Virat Kohli, and Sachin Tendulkar. He is now part of an exclusive group of players who have scored over 500 runs in multiple Indian Premier League (IPL) seasons as a captain.
This milestone was reached during a match against his former team, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), at Eden Gardens, where he delivered an impressive performance, scoring 85 runs off 49 balls, including five fours and seven sixes, achieving a strike rate of 173.47.
Throughout this IPL season, Gill has played 12 matches, accumulating 552 runs with an average of 46.00 and a strike rate of 160.46, featuring five half-centuries. He currently stands as the second-highest run-scorer, trailing his opening partner Sai Sudharsan by just three runs.
This marks Gill's second consecutive IPL season where he has surpassed the 500-run mark as a captain. Last year, he finished as the fourth-highest run-scorer with 650 runs in 15 innings, averaging 50.00 and maintaining a strike rate of 155.87, including six fifties.
David Warner holds the record for the most seasons with 500-plus runs as a captain, achieving this feat three times with Sunrisers Hyderabad. KL Rahul has also matched this record with three seasons across different teams.
Both Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli have recorded two seasons each with over 500 runs as captains, showcasing their remarkable consistency in the league.
Gill has particularly excelled against KKR, amassing 356 runs in just six innings at an impressive average of 59.33 and a strike rate of 158.22, including three fifties and a top score of 90.
In the match, Gujarat Titans chose to bowl first, and KKR capitalized on this decision. After an early dismissal of skipper Rahane, Finn Allen and Angkrish Raghuvanshi formed a formidable partnership, scoring 95 runs together. Allen scored 93 runs off 35 balls, while Raghuvanshi contributed significantly with an unbeaten 82 runs off 44 balls, leading KKR to a total of 247/2.
Mohammed Siraj and Sai Kishore each took a wicket for GT.
During the chase, Sai Sudharsan had to retire hurt early on. However, Gill and Jos Buttler formed a strong 128-run partnership, with Gill scoring 85 and Buttler adding 57. Unfortunately, after their dismissals, GT struggled to maintain the required run rate, finishing at 218/4.
Sunil Narine was the standout bowler for KKR, taking 2 wickets for 29 runs and earning the 'Player of the Match' title.
Currently, GT holds the second position in the league with eight wins and five losses, totaling 16 points, while KKR sits in seventh place with five wins, six losses, and one no result, accumulating 11 points.
