Shreyas Iyer's Maiden IPL Century Leads Punjab Kings to Victory Over Lucknow Super Giants
Iyer's Stellar Performance Secures Win for PBKS
Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India] - On Saturday night, Punjab Kings (PBKS) achieved a remarkable 7-wicket victory against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), thanks to a stunning maiden IPL century from their captain, Shreyas Iyer, and a solid fifty from Prabhsimran Singh.
Iyer scored an impressive 101 runs off just 51 deliveries, featuring 11 boundaries and 5 sixes, while Prabhsimran contributed significantly with 69 runs from 39 balls.
This win propelled Punjab Kings to fourth place in the league standings, accumulating 15 points after their final group-stage match.
Chasing a target of 197, PBKS faced an early setback when Priyansh Arya was dismissed for a golden duck by Mohammed Shami in the first over.
Shami struck again in his next over, sending Cooper Connolly back for 18 runs, which brought Iyer to the crease. Together, they stabilized the innings, reaching 65-2.
With regular boundaries, Iyer and Prabhsimran pushed the score to 105-2 after 10 overs. Prabhsimran reached his sixth fifty of the season in the 12th over, while Iyer followed suit shortly after, marking his own sixth fifty and surpassing 7000 T20 runs.
Prabhsimran Singh also made history as the first uncapped Indian player to score over 500 runs in multiple IPL seasons.
The duo continued to dominate the Lucknow bowlers, surpassing 150 runs in just 14 overs.
However, after conceding 12 runs in the 16th over, Arjun Tendulkar managed to dismiss Prabhsimran for 69 runs, which included 7 fours and 2 sixes, bringing Suryansh Shedge to the crease.
Iyer maintained his aggressive approach, scoring 20 runs off Shami's over, reducing the target to 15 runs needed from 24 balls.
In the 18th over, Iyer sealed the match for PBKS, hitting a six off the last ball of Mohsin Khan's over to complete his maiden IPL century.
Earlier, LSG had set a competitive total of 196/6, with significant contributions from Josh Inglis and Abdul Samad, despite the Punjab bowlers' consistent breakthroughs.
Lucknow started strong, with Josh Inglis attacking PBKS pacer Arshdeep Singh for 16 runs in the first over.
However, the momentum shifted quickly when Azmatullah Omarzai dismissed Arshin Kulkarni for a golden duck in the next over. Marco Jansen then bowled Nicholas Pooran for just 2 runs, leaving LSG at 20/2.
A recovery came in the fifth over as Ayush Badoni scored 18 runs off Jansen, bringing LSG to 42/2.
He continued his aggressive batting, hitting Omarzai for 22 runs in the next over. Despite losing two quick wickets, Lucknow ended the powerplay at 66/2.
Yuzvendra Chahal provided a breakthrough in the seventh over, dismissing Badoni after a quick 43 runs off 18 balls, which included five fours and three sixes.
Following Badoni's exit, Rishabh Pant and Josh Inglis kept the scoreboard ticking, reaching 100/3 at the 10-over mark.
In the 14th over, Inglis reached his half-century in just 28 balls. However, Chahal struck again, breaking the 65-run partnership by dismissing Pant for 26 runs off 22 balls, which included three fours. At this point, Lucknow was at 134/4.
Despite Pant's dismissal, runs continued to flow, and Lucknow reached 157/4 in 16 overs.
On the last ball of the 17th over, Shashank Singh took the crucial wicket of Inglis, who scored 72 runs off 44 balls, hitting nine fours and two sixes, leaving LSG at 169/5.
In the next over, Jansen took his second wicket, dismissing Mukul Choudhary for just one run.
In the final over, Arshdeep Singh conceded 17 runs, allowing LSG to post a total of 196/6, with Abdul Samad remaining not out on 37 runs off 20 balls, including three fours and three sixes.
For Punjab Kings, Yuzvendra Chahal (2/25), Marco Jansen (2/33), Azmatullah Omarzai (1/29), and Shashank Singh (1/29) were the standout bowlers.
