Shreyas Iyer Shines with First IPL Fifty at Wankhede as PBKS Triumphs Over MI
Iyer's Breakthrough Performance at Wankhede
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India] - On April 16, Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer ended his Wankhede Stadium drought by scoring his inaugural IPL fifty at this iconic venue, showcasing his remarkable form during a match against the Mumbai Indians (MI).
Prior to this game, Iyer had accumulated only 196 runs across nine IPL appearances at Wankhede, his home ground for domestic cricket. However, in a crucial clash against the five-time champions, he delivered an impressive performance, amassing 66 runs off just 35 balls, featuring five boundaries and four sixes, achieving a strike rate of 188.57.
Since taking over as captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2024 and leading them to victory, Iyer has excelled in run chases. He has been involved in 14 successful chases for both KKR and PBKS, scoring 621 runs at an average of 124.2, with a striking rate of 173.5, including seven fifties. During this period, he has hit 45 fours and 39 sixes.
CricViz highlights Iyer's aggressive batting style this season, which contrasts with his previously more conservative approach. His strike rates for the first 10 balls since IPL 2022 have been notable: 129.5 (2022), 133.6 (2024), 133.1 (2025), and an impressive 186.1 in the current season.
With this victory, Iyer has led PBKS to their 18th win against MI, the highest by any team against the five-time champions in IPL history, alongside CSK (18 wins in 39 matches). PBKS has achieved 18 victories against MI in 35 encounters, including six wins out of 11 matches at Wankhede, the most by any IPL team, with CSK trailing at five wins in 13 matches.
Iyer currently ranks as the sixth-highest run-scorer this season, accumulating 203 runs in four innings at an average of 67.66 and a strike rate of 187.96, including three fifties and a top score of 69 not out.
This win propels PBKS to the top of the standings with four victories and one no result, totaling nine points, surpassing the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Meanwhile, MI sits at ninth place with one win and four losses.
Batting first, MI posted a score of 195/6, thanks to a substantial 122-run partnership between Quinton de Kock (112* off 60 balls, with eight fours and seven sixes) and Naman Dhir (50 off 31 balls, with three fours and three sixes). Arshdeep Singh was the standout bowler for PBKS, taking 3 wickets for 22 runs.
Despite losing early wickets, Prabhsimran Singh (80* off 39 balls, with 11 fours and two sixes) and the consistent Iyer (66 off 35 balls, with five fours and four sixes) guided PBKS to their target in just 16.3 overs.
