Shreyas Iyer Aims for Redemption in 100th IPL Match Against RCB
Iyer's Milestone Match in Dharamsala
Dharamsala (Himachal Pradesh) [India] - On May 17, Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer is set to lead his team in a crucial match against the reigning champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), marking his 100th game as an IPL captain.
After a promising start to the season with an impressive seven-match unbeaten streak, including six victories and one no result, Iyer's squad has faced a challenging phase, suffering five consecutive defeats. This slump has jeopardized their chances of qualifying for the playoffs, making this milestone match a pivotal moment for the team.
Throughout his IPL career, Iyer has captained Delhi Capitals (DC), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and PBKS in a total of 99 matches. His record includes 41 games with DC, 29 with KKR, and 29 with PBKS, achieving 56 wins, two of which were in Super Overs, while losing 40 and having three matches end without a result.
His win percentage stands at an impressive 58.3%, tying him with the legendary MS Dhoni for the highest win rate among IPL captains, according to statistics from ESPNCricinfo.
For PBKS specifically, Iyer's record shows 16 wins, 11 losses, and two no results, resulting in a win percentage of 55.17.
Recognized as one of the top captains in IPL history, Iyer is the only leader to have guided three different teams to the finals: DC against Mumbai Indians (MI) in 2020, KKR in 2024 against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), and PBKS last season against RCB. Notably, he led KKR to their first title since 2014, marking their third overall.
In the current season, Iyer has scored 396 runs in 11 matches, averaging 49.50 with a strike rate of 164.31, including five half-centuries. However, his performance has dipped in the latter half of the season, with only a standout 59 against DC, while his other scores have been 4, 5, 19, and a sluggish 30. Across the five losses, he has accumulated just 117 runs at an average of 23.40.
Despite these challenges, Iyer has shown resilience throughout his career, and this match presents another opportunity for him to bounce back. However, he faces tough competition from two formidable bowlers.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the current Orange Cap holder with 22 wickets, has dismissed Iyer three times in 11 innings, with Iyer managing a strike rate of only 90 against him in T20 matches. He has scored a mere 45 runs off 50 balls against the 'Swing King', hitting just four boundaries.
Against Josh Hazlewood, Iyer's record is even less favorable, having been dismissed four times in six innings and scoring only 11 runs off 22 balls.
