Shashank Singh Highlights Importance of Home Wins for Punjab Kings in IPL
Shashank Singh's Key Role in Punjab Kings' Victory
Following a crucial contribution to Punjab Kings' first home victory of the season, Shashank Singh stressed the significance of securing full points during home matches in the IPL.
On Tuesday, Punjab Kings achieved an 18-run triumph over Chennai Super Kings, with Priyansh Arya delivering an outstanding century. Shashank made a notable contribution, scoring 52 runs off 36 balls, which included two fours and three sixes. He also formed a vital partnership of 71 runs off just 34 balls with Arya for the sixth wicket, aiding the team in their win.
With two matches remaining in Mullanpur and three in Dharamsala, Shashank emphasized the need to maintain their performance to secure a playoff spot.
To remain in the top four, we must win all our home games. We've had excellent practice sessions at both venues, and over the next 11 days, we have four matches, two of which are at the same location. It's crucial to sustain our momentum,” Shashank remarked.
He credited Brian Lara for boosting his confidence during his time with Sunrisers Hyderabad under the legendary West Indies player. Additionally, he expressed gratitude to Ricky Ponting, the PBKS coach, and Punjab captain Shreyas Iyer for granting him the freedom to play his game.
The T20 format is about self-expression. I've been fortunate to have the backing of Ponting, Lara, and Iyer. When I played for Sunrisers Hyderabad three years ago, Lara advised me to focus on timing rather than trying to emulate others,” the 33-year-old stated. “Iyer is very approachable and maintains a positive atmosphere, while Ponting encourages us to express ourselves,” he added.
Iyer Praises Arya's Stellar Performance
In a related note, Iyer commended Arya for his remarkable innings of 103 runs off 42 balls, which included nine sixes and seven boundaries, against the five-time champions CSK. Iyer described Arya's performance as one of the finest he has witnessed in the IPL.
The way Arya played was mesmerizing. It was an extraordinary innings. In our last game, he seemed hesitant in his decision-making against Jofra Archer,” the captain noted.
He (Arya) trusted his instincts and played freely, which is the mindset I want everyone in the team to adopt. It was truly a remarkable performance,” he added.
Iyer also mentioned that his team has yet to showcase their best performance of the season but emphasized the importance of focusing on the positives as they prepare for upcoming matches. “We haven't played our best game yet. There are still some nerves. We need to conduct group catching sessions. However, we won the match, and we should concentrate on the positives,” he stated.
Punjab Kings will next compete against SRH in Hyderabad on April 12.
