Shane Watson Discusses KKR's Strategy Against RCB and Virat Kohli's Threat
Watson Highlights Kohli's Adaptability Ahead of IPL Clash
In Raipur, Chhattisgarh, Kolkata Knight Riders' assistant coach Shane Watson emphasized the constant challenge posed by Virat Kohli, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) star, during a pre-match press conference for their IPL 2026 encounter. Watson noted that while opposing teams often devise strategies targeting Kohli's supposed weaknesses, his ability to adjust makes him a formidable opponent.
Watson acknowledged Kohli's strengths and stressed the necessity for KKR to maintain focus from the very first delivery. He remarked, "Every team has plans aimed at exploiting Kohli's perceived vulnerabilities, but he is adept at navigating these challenges. We hope he plays an aggressive shot early on, similar to his last game. Our aim is to be sharp from the outset, regardless of who is batting."
The assistant coach also discussed Australian all-rounder Cameron Green, who is adapting to the pressures of his hefty IPL price tag of Rs 25.20 crore. Watson expressed his excitement about working closely with Green, stating, "High price tags can be daunting, and Cam has experienced this in previous IPL seasons. I am eager to guide him in unlocking his full potential."
Watson noted that Green is gradually finding his footing within the team and is concentrating on enhancing his performance in the T20 format. He added, "He is becoming more comfortable in his role and is focused on his execution. It’s an exciting journey for him, especially since he hasn’t played much T20 cricket, and I’m fortunate to assist in this process."
The team is not fixating on long-term outcomes but remains optimistic about turning their IPL 2026 season around after a strong recent showing. When asked about KKR's ability to recover from a slow start to make the playoffs, Watson reiterated the importance of focusing on present performance rather than future expectations. He stated, "We haven’t discussed future scenarios. It’s a cliché to avoid looking ahead, but that’s our approach."
Reflecting on the team's recent performances, Watson highlighted the improvement in unity and overall play. He remarked, "From our position midway through the tournament to the cricket we’ve played recently, especially in the last few matches, it’s been impressive to see our group come together across all aspects."
Watson pointed to KKR's comprehensive victory over Delhi Capitals as a demonstration of the team's potential when all departments function cohesively. He said, "Against Delhi Capitals, we ticked every box in a complete performance, which is what we are striving for."
As the tournament progresses, Watson noted that the team is gaining confidence while acknowledging the history of IPL comebacks from challenging starts. He concluded, "We are quietly confident in our skills and trajectory, which gives us a solid chance to achieve our goals. We are optimistic, knowing that IPL history shows teams can reach the finals after slow starts. The key is to continue delivering complete performances like we did against DC."
