Delhi Capitals Triumph Over Mumbai Indians

New Delhi [India] - On April 4, Sameer Rizvi delivered an impressive performance, scoring 90 runs to guide the Delhi Capitals (DC) to a six-wicket victory against the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the eighth match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

This victory marks only the second win for DC in their last seven encounters against MI. Additionally, it is their second win in six home games since 2025, with the previous victory coming in a Super Over against the Rajasthan Royals.

Chasing a target of 163 runs, the Axar Patel-led team faced early setbacks as Deepak Chahar dismissed KL Rahul in the first over, with Rahul scoring just one run before being caught behind by Ryan Rickelton. This was the first instance of Chahar taking Rahul's wicket in IPL history.

Nitish Rana, who came in at number three, had a brief stay as Jasprit Bumrah executed a direct hit to run him out while attempting a quick single.

Pathum Nissanka then accelerated the innings, forming a 66-run partnership with Rizvi for the third wicket, scoring 44 runs off 30 balls, including seven boundaries.

After Nissanka's dismissal, Rizvi took control, contributing significantly to a 78-run partnership with David Miller for the fourth wicket. The 22-year-old completed his second half-century of the season and continued to score aggressively.

Rizvi's 90 runs came off just 51 balls, featuring seven fours and an equal number of sixes. He now leads the Orange Cap race with a total of 160 runs in two innings this IPL season.

His score of 90 is the second-highest by an impact player in IPL history, following Jos Buttler's 107* against KKR in 2024.

Rizvi's innings is also the third-highest score by a DC player against MI, trailing Virender Sehwag's 95 not out in 2013 and Jason Roy's 91 not out in 2018. His seven sixes are tied for the most by a DC player against MI, matching Rishabh Pant and Tristan Stubbs.

Miller sealed the win with a boundary on the first ball of the 19th over, marking DC's second win of the season while MI faced their first defeat.

Rizvi was awarded Player of the Match for his outstanding performance, marking his second consecutive impactful innings and his second POTM award of IPL 2026.

Earlier, DC won the toss and opted to field first. Suryakumar Yadav captained MI in the absence of Hardik Pandya, who was unwell.

Rickelton and Rohit Sharma started strong, accumulating runs quickly in the initial overs. However, Mukesh Kumar's second over changed the momentum, as he dismissed Rickelton and Tilak Varma with a caught and bowled.

This over halted MI's scoring, forcing Suryakumar and Rohit to wait for scoring opportunities.

The pair added 53 runs for the third wicket in 40 balls before Axar Patel dismissed Sharma, who scored 35 runs off 26 balls.

Sherfane Rutherford also fell quickly, caught by Mukesh Kumar off Vipraj Nigam's bowling after scoring just five runs.

Suryakumar reached his half-century but was dismissed LBW by Lungi Ngidi, contributing 51 runs from 36 balls.

Naman Dhir added 28 runs off 21 balls before being caught by Tristan Stubbs off T Natarajan's bowling.

Mitchell Santner (18 not out) and Corbin Bosch (11 not out) hit a few boundaries, helping MI reach a total of 162 runs.

Mukesh Kumar took two wickets, while Patel, Natarajan, Ngidi, and Nigam each claimed one wicket.
