In a recent post, cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar shared his insights from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, emphasizing standout moments, emerging talents, and notable strategies that emerged during the tournament.
On Reddit, Tendulkar expressed that in a lengthy tournament like the IPL, certain performances and moments leave a lasting impression, even if one cannot follow every match closely.
“Cricket is a continuous learning experience. In a tournament as extensive as the IPL, some moments resonate with you. Although I couldn't watch every game this season, here are my key takeaways,” he noted.
He highlighted pivotal moments, such as Josh Hazlewood's dismissal of Jos Buttler in a critical Qualifier match, which he described as a prime example of the importance of deception in tense situations.
“Hazlewood's dismissal of Buttler in the fifth over of the 1st Qualifier illustrated the power of deception. Buttler had scored runs with a 4, 6, and another 4, and once a batter finds their rhythm, they often commit too early. What made this wicket remarkable was how Hazlewood subtly reduced the speed of his next delivery by 10 km/h, catching Buttler off guard,” Tendulkar explained.
He also commended 15-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi for his influence beyond mere runs, noting that the young player brought energy and confidence to the Rajasthan Royals during crucial knockout matches.
“Suryavanshi's impact extended beyond his scoring. Opponents were strategizing against him, and fans anticipated his arrival at the crease. His ability to score quickly in both the Eliminator and Qualifier demonstrated his unwavering intent, even under pressure. His presence seemed to instill a sense of belief in the Rajasthan Royals every time he stepped onto the field,” the cricket legend remarked.
Discussing team dynamics, Tendulkar noted that Royal Challengers Bengaluru showcased a strong sense of collective responsibility, attributing their success to captain Rajat Patidar's leadership in creating a balanced team atmosphere that propelled them to another final.
“Successful teams develop a distinct identity throughout a campaign. RCB's identity appeared to revolve around shared responsibility. Patidar led effectively, but equally important was his ability to foster an environment where others could shine. This balance between leadership and contribution was crucial to their journey to yet another final,” he stated.
Tendulkar also analyzed tactical trends, observing that many matches were determined during the middle overs, specifically between the 7th and 15th overs. He proposed a potential evolution in T20 rules, suggesting a split powerplay structure to enhance strategic depth.
“One trend I noticed this season was how many games were decided between overs 7 and 15. Teams are now much better prepared for power plays and death overs. I believe the Powerplay should be divided into two segments: the first four overs as batting powerplay and two overs of bowling powerplay that could be utilized at any point in the innings. If implemented, this could become the most strategic phase of T20 cricket,” he wrote.
He further praised Punjab Kings for their proactive approach throughout the tournament, while also acknowledging Gujarat Titans' consistency in maintaining stable performance levels despite the unpredictable nature of the format.
“Punjab Kings brought incredible energy to the tournament. Their style was positive, bold, and often game-changing. Momentum is vital in long tournaments. Ultimately, in such a fast-paced competition, it comes down to process rather than attachment to results. Punjab focused on process in the first half and shifted to results in the latter half,” Tendulkar noted.
In conclusion, Tendulkar remarked that IPL seasons often undergo significant transformations from start to finish, with teams adapting and improving as the competition unfolds, highlighting the necessity for continuous evolution in modern cricket.
“What stands out about the Gujarat Titans is their ability to maintain a remarkably consistent performance level throughout the season. The IPL is inherently unpredictable, but GT rarely deviated from their method, even when results fluctuated. They minimized both highs and lows, adhering closely to their style of play more consistently than most teams. Over a lengthy tournament, this ability to manage uncertainty often proves more valuable than sporadic bursts of brilliance or isolated match-winning performances,” he concluded.
