Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India] - Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad has been penalized with a fine of Rs 24 lakh following his team's second slow over-rate infraction during their IPL 2026 match against the Gujarat Titans (GT) on Thursday.
The IPL governing body announced that Gaikwad's fine was imposed after the team was found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate for the second time this season. Additionally, the other players in the playing eleven, along with CSK's Impact Players, faced fines of either Rs 6 lakh or 25% of their match fees, whichever amount was lower.
According to the IPL's official statement, "Ruturaj Gaikwad, Captain of Chennai Super Kings, has been fined due to his team's slow over-rate during Match 66 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad."
As this marked the team's second offence (the first occurring in Match 18) under Article 2.22 of the IPL's Code of Conduct, which addresses minimum over-rate violations, Gaikwad was fined INR 24 lakhs. The remaining members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, will incur fines of either INR six lakhs or 25% of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser.
In the match itself, Gujarat Titans secured a commanding 89-run victory over Chennai Super Kings, showcasing a strong all-round performance.
GT batted first, scoring 229 runs for the loss of 4 wickets, with significant contributions from Shubman Gill (64), Sai Sudharsan (84), and Jos Buttler (57*), following a rapid opening partnership and steady scoring throughout the innings.
In reply, CSK was dismissed for 140 runs, with Mohammed Siraj claiming three wickets early on, setting the tone for the match. Kagiso Rabada and Rashid Khan also took three wickets each. Despite a quick 47 from Shivam Dube, CSK's batting lineup crumbled, leading to their dismissal within 20 overs. This defeat marked the end of CSK's campaign in IPL 2026, as they failed to qualify for the playoffs for the third consecutive year.
