Rohit Sharma's New Fitness Regimen Ahead of IPL 2026

On Tuesday, Mahela Jayawardene, the head coach of Mumbai Indians, shared insights about a "much fitter and highly dedicated" Rohit Sharma as the team prepares for IPL 2026. Jayawardene emphasized that Rohit has been diligently working on his skills in the lead-up to the tournament.

After retiring from T20 internationals, Rohit last represented India in a three-match ODI series against New Zealand in January. Jayawardene expressed excitement about Rohit taking the lead once again.

"He has put in significant effort behind the scenes," Jayawardene remarked to reporters during the MI Junior 2026 finals. "He has been with us from day one of the training camp and looked impressive in the nets."

"This newer version of Rohit is not only fitter but also more committed, and I am eager to see him lead us effectively," he added.

Jayawardene also commented on Suryakumar Yadav, India's T20I captain, noting that he is not overly concerned about his personal performance. Instead, he praised Yadav for his leadership during the T20 World Cup, where India secured a record third title.

"SKY is not too worried about his form. He is a talented player who always steps up when needed," Jayawardene stated. "While he aims for more consistency, his leadership and ability to keep the team united were commendable during the World Cup."

Jayawardene acknowledged the tough decisions Yadav had to make throughout the season and during the World Cup, expressing confidence that he would return to the camp refreshed and ready.

The former Sri Lankan captain highlighted the dedication of Jasprit Bumrah, noting the effort he puts into his bowling. "Bumrah is a unique talent. His work ethic and strategic thinking are crucial," Jayawardene remarked.

"His performance in critical moments during the World Cup was exceptional. Having worked closely with him, I understand the thought process behind his execution," he added.

Jayawardene believes that India's recent successes, including the T20 World Cup victory and the Women's ODI World Cup win, will motivate a new generation of players, particularly those in the MI Junior camp.

"The triumphs of both the men's and women's teams have certainly inspired young players," he said. "It's wonderful to see the enthusiasm among the girls, and I take pride in our boys like Rohit, Hardik Pandya, Surya, Tilak Varma, and Bumrah."

"In a World Cup, every player must rise to the occasion, as each match is challenging. The collective performance is what leads to victory," Jayawardene explained.

"I am pleased that four players from Mumbai Indians participated in the World Cup," he added.

Jayawardene expressed satisfaction with the selection options available to Mumbai Indians, highlighting top performers from the T20 World Cup, including England's Will Jacks and New Zealand's Mitchell Santner.

"I prefer having a selection dilemma rather than none at all. We have a strong group, including Jacks, Sherfane Rutherford, Ryan Rickelton, Quinton de Kock, and Santner, who captained New Zealand. We assembled this talented group before the World Cup," he noted.

"It will be a healthy challenge for me, but we will make the right decisions at the appropriate time," he assured.

Jayawardene confirmed that Mumbai Indians have granted an extended break to their World Cup-winning players. "We fell short last year, but our goal remains to succeed every season," he stated.

"We understand it's a long season, so our preseason will commence as usual, focusing on hard work and integrating new players. Our World Cup champions will join us next weekend after their break," he concluded.
