Uthappa's Take on SRH's Title Aspirations

In a recent discussion, former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa expressed skepticism about Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) being serious contenders for the IPL title this season, despite their formidable batting lineup.

During an appearance on JioHotstar, Uthappa elaborated on his views, stating that while SRH's aggressive batting style is entertaining, it may not suffice for clinching the IPL trophy.

He remarked, "Although SRH's aggressive batting is fun to watch, it won't guarantee them success in the IPL. Their bowling attack appears to be a weak point. It's the bowlers who ultimately secure the trophy."

The fast-bowling options for SRH include Shivam Mavi, Jaydev Unadkat, Eshan Malinga, Harshal Patel, and Nitish Kumar Reddy, while Harsh Dubey and Zeeshan Ansari are leading the spin department.

Uthappa pointed out that the bowling unit needs to adapt to Hyderabad's 'flat wickets' and avoid excessive pace.

He explained, "In Hyderabad, where they play seven matches, the pitch is a batting paradise. Even a bowler like Mohammed Shami struggles on such flat surfaces. A bowler like Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who can swing the ball and vary his pace, is essential. At the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, bowlers should not rely on pace, as the ball doesn't seam much. Currently, SRH lacks a bowling unit capable of supporting their aggressive batting if the top order falters."

The team faced a significant setback when captain Pat Cummins was ruled out for the initial matches due to injury, with Ishan Kishan stepping in as the interim leader.

Uthappa also highlighted that SRH's bowlers have struggled to defend low totals when the batting lineup fails to perform.

"Last season was telling. Besides Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, and Heinrich Klaasen, no other batsman consistently delivered. When the top order collapsed, the bowlers couldn't defend the scores. Therefore, I don't view SRH as serious title contenders this season," Uthappa concluded.

The SRH squad for the IPL 2026 season includes: Salil Arora, Travis Head, Ishan Kishan, Heinrich Klaasen, Ravichandran Smaran, Aniket Verma, Abhishek Sharma, Brydon Carse, Harsh Dubey, Liam Livingstone, Kamindu Mendis, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Shivam Mavi, Pat Cummins, Amit Kumar, Krains Fuletra, Praful Hinge, Eshan Malinga, Harshal Patel, Sakib Hussain, Shivang Kumar, Onkar Tarmale, Jaydev Unadkat, and Zeeshan Ansari.
