Rishabh Pant Leads Lucknow Super Giants to Victory Over Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2026
Lucknow Super Giants Secure First Win of IPL 2026
In a thrilling encounter on April 5, 2026, in Hyderabad, Rishabh Pant, the captain of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), played a pivotal role in steering his team to victory against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). LSG triumphed by five wickets, marking their inaugural win of the IPL season.
Pant showcased his batting prowess with an impressive unbeaten score of 68 runs off 50 deliveries, successfully chasing down a target of 157 runs.
Despite an early setback where Eshan Malinga (1/30 in 4 overs) dismissed Mitchell Marsh (14), Aiden Markram stepped up during the Powerplay, scoring 45 runs off 27 balls to maintain the required run rate.
Even after Markram fell to Shivang Kumar (1/30 in 4 overs) and the middle order faced challenges with Ayush Badoni (12) being stumped and Nicholas Pooran (1) run out, Pant remained a steady influence. His captaincy was evident as he anchored the innings with his unbeaten 68.
The match reached a nail-biting climax when SRH's Harsh Dubey (2/18 in 4 overs) took a crucial wicket of Abdul Samad (16), leaving LSG needing 13 runs from the last two overs. Pant's calm demeanor was instrumental as he guided his team to victory on the fifth ball of the 19th over.
With this win, LSG now occupies the seventh position in the IPL 2026 points table, earning two points from three matches, while SRH sits fifth, also with two points from three games.
Earlier in the match, Sunrisers Hyderabad found themselves in trouble at 29/4 in just 8 overs, thanks to the effective bowling of LSG, particularly Mohammed Shami, who led the attack.
However, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Heinrich Klaasen mounted a rescue effort for SRH, scoring 56 off 33 balls and 62 off 41 balls, respectively, helping their team reach a total of 156/9 in 20 overs.
After winning the toss and opting to bowl first, LSG's bowlers, spearheaded by a remarkable Shami (2/9 in 4 overs), dismantled SRH's top order early on. Pant's decision to bowl first proved beneficial as Shami struck in the first over, dismissing Abhishek Sharma for a duck.
The struggles continued for SRH as Travis Head (7) and stand-in captain Ishan Kishan (1) fell quickly, with Kishan being bowled out by a stunning delivery from Prince Yadav (2/34 in 4 overs). By the end of the Powerplay, SRH was in dire straits at 22/3, which soon became 26/4 when Liam Livingstone (14) was caught brilliantly by Pant off Digvesh Rathi (1/46 in 4 overs).
With SRH's aggressive strategy backfiring, it was up to local talent Nitish Kumar Reddy and South African hitter Heinrich Klaasen to stabilize the innings. Their partnership of 116 runs was crucial in lifting SRH from a precarious position to a more competitive total.
Reddy was the more aggressive of the two, hitting 56 runs off 33 balls, including five sixes, while Klaasen played a more measured innings, scoring 62 runs off 41 balls with five boundaries and two sixes.
Just when SRH seemed poised for a strong finish, LSG's bowlers struck back. Manimaran Siddharth (1/29 in 4 overs) ended the crucial partnership by dismissing Reddy, shifting the momentum once again. Klaasen followed soon after, and the lower order of SRH struggled against the disciplined death bowling of Avesh Khan (2/36 in 4 overs) and Prince Yadav, resulting in a final score of 156/9.
