Rishabh Pant and Lucknow Super Giants Face Challenges in IPL Season
Struggles for Lucknow Super Giants and Rishabh Pant
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India] - Former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu emphasized the need for introspection within the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and their captain, Rishabh Pant. He noted that the bowlers are not dismissing Pant; rather, he is falling victim to his own mistakes.
LSG's disappointing season continued as they faced their third defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Bengaluru on Wednesday. Pant had to retire hurt early in the innings after sustaining an elbow injury but returned later, managing to score only one run.
Last season, Pant struggled significantly in his debut with LSG, becoming the most expensive IPL player at Rs 27 crores, accumulating just 269 runs in 13 innings with an average of 24.45 and a strike rate of 133.16, including one century and one fifty. His difficulties have persisted this season, where he has scored 104 runs in five innings at an average of 26.00 and a strike rate of 122.35, with a top score of 68*, his only fifty.
During a segment on Star Sports 'Cricket Live', Sidhu discussed the reliance of LSG on their top order, which has not performed well. He remarked that while Pant possesses talent, he needs to spend more time at the crease.
“There is significant soul-searching required. Their issues have been ongoing, particularly with the top order underperforming. They are overly dependent on their top three, but the results have been lacking. Players like Markram, Pooran, Marsh, and Rishabh Pant have immense potential, yet partnerships are scarce. Even a 50-run stand has been infrequent. I believe bowlers are not dismissing Rishabh; he is often getting himself out. He has the skill and capability, and if he allows himself time, he can turn things around. Currently, both their batting and bowling appear to be struggling,” he stated.
The LSG top order, featuring Mitchell Marsh (115 runs in five innings at an average of 23.00 and a strike rate above 132, with a best score of 40), Aiden Markram (120 runs in five matches at an average of 14.00, strike rate above 151, and a best score of 45), Pant (104 runs in five innings at an average of 26.00, strike rate over 122, with a best score of 68*), and Nicholas Pooran (42 runs in five innings at an average of 8.40, strike rate over 76, with a best score of 19) has collectively managed just one fifty.
In the chase for 147 runs, Virat Kohli, who later revealed he was not at full fitness due to a sore knee, still managed to impress. Sidhu praised Kohli's performance, stating, “Virat at 20 percent is better than most at 100 percent.”
“That’s the kind of impact he has. Despite not being at his peak physically, he followed up his previous fifty with another strong performance. His ability to dominate bowlers like Mohammed Shami was evident, showcasing his skill even after 18-19 years at the top level, which is why he remains crucial to the IPL,” he concluded.
Virat Kohli currently leads the Orange Cap race, having scored 228 runs in five matches at an average of 57.00 and a strike rate over 158, including two fifties.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru showcased a strong all-round performance, securing a five-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants by chasing down 149 runs in just 15.1 overs, thanks to contributions from Virat (49 runs off 34 balls, including six fours and a six) and skipper Rajat Patidar (27 runs off 13 balls, with a four and three sixes). Krunal Pandya also reached a milestone of 100 IPL wickets as RCB's bowlers delivered impressive performances.
RCB's bowling unit set the tone with a disciplined display, led by Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who achieved his best figures for the franchise (3/27), while Rasikh Salam delivered a standout performance with career-best IPL figures of 4/24. Josh Hazlewood also contributed with RCB's most economical spell of the season (1/20), executing their plans effectively. The match also marked a significant achievement for Krunal Pandya (2/38), who completed 100 wickets in the IPL, further enhancing RCB's depth.
