RCB Seeks Strong Opening Partnership Against KKR Amid Injury Concerns
RCB's Opening Pair Under Pressure Ahead of KKR Clash
Raipur (Chhattisgarh) [India], May 13: The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the reigning champions, are grappling with the absence of their key opener Phil Salt due to injury as they prepare for a pivotal match against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Wednesday.
During their successful campaign last year, the combination of Salt and Virat Kohli showcased an aggressive style of play, despite their differing approaches. However, this season, RCB's opening partnership, which has seen young Jacob Bethell step in during the latter half, has struggled to replicate that success.
In the previous season, the duo of Virat and Salt, along with Bethell for two matches, amassed 682 runs at an impressive average of 45.46 and a run rate of 10.30, achieving seven partnerships of fifty runs or more.
In contrast, this season, their performance has dipped significantly, accumulating only 332 runs over 11 innings, averaging 30.16 with a run rate of 9.91, and managing just two fifty-plus partnerships, according to statistics from Cricbuzz. Notably, 227 of these runs were scored during the six innings featuring the Salt-Kohli partnership, which included a century and a fifty-run stand.
Bethell's performance has been disappointing, contributing just 70 runs in five innings at an average of 14.00 and a strike rate of 120.69, with a top score of 27 and only two innings exceeding 20 runs. Additionally, Virat's recent slump, marked by two consecutive ducks, has compounded the issue, with their highest partnership being a mere 34 runs against the Gujarat Titans (GT).
Although Salt has returned to India after undergoing scans for his finger injury, his participation against KKR remains uncertain. Regardless of Salt's status, RCB urgently needs their opening pair to regain their form from last season.
