In a thrilling opening match of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) delivered a commanding performance against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Hyderabad on Saturday, March 28. The defending champions secured a convincing six-wicket victory with 27 balls remaining, marking a strong start to their title defense. This win not only placed RCB at the top of the points table but also significantly improved their Net Run Rate (NRR), a crucial factor in playoff qualifications.

During the match, RCB captain Rajat Patidar won the toss and opted to bowl first. SRH managed to score 201 runs, thanks to a remarkable 38-ball 80 from Ishan Kishan, who was making his debut as captain. Despite losing wickets, Kishan formed a solid 97-run partnership with Heinrich Klaasen, who contributed 31 runs off 22 balls. Aniket Verma also played a vital role, scoring 43 runs off just 18 deliveries, pushing SRH past the 200-run mark.
Jacob Duffy, making his IPL debut for RCB, was the standout bowler, taking three wickets for just 22 runs in four overs, dismissing Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, and Nitish Kumar Reddy during the powerplay. In response, RCB faced an early setback with the loss of Phil Salt, but Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal, who scored 61 runs off 24 balls, ensured a smooth chase. Rajat Patidar also made a significant contribution with 31 runs off 12 balls.
Looking ahead, the action shifts to Mumbai, where the Mumbai Indians (MI) will face the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Sunday, March 29. RCB's next match is against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on April 5 in Bengaluru, while SRH will take on KKR in Hyderabad on April 2.
