CSK's New Chapter: Ashwin's Insights

New Delhi, July 15: Ravichandran Ashwin, the former spinner for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the Indian national team, has expressed that the franchise should start strategizing for a future beyond Stephen Fleming's extensive tenure as head coach. He believes CSK has reached a pivotal moment that calls for a new direction.

On Tuesday, CSK and Fleming mutually agreed to part ways, marking the end of one of the most successful coaching partnerships in the Indian Premier League (IPL) history.

Ashwin emphasized that if MS Dhoni is open to stepping into the coaching role, he would be the perfect candidate due to his profound understanding of the team and his successful collaboration with Fleming over the years.

He also pointed out that any new coach would encounter challenges, as Dhoni remains a significant presence within the franchise, actively involved in team selection and strategic discussions.

“Fleming had a deep understanding of what motivated [MS] Dhoni, and Dhoni recognized Fleming as an excellent support. Their partnership has lasted for a long time. It’s time for Chennai Super Kings to consider new possibilities,” Ashwin remarked, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.

“If Dhoni is willing to take on the coaching role, there’s no better choice for Chennai Super Kings. If not, they must find someone capable of operating independently and taking responsibility for their decisions. There will always be a degree of uncertainty for anyone entering that dressing room, as Mahendra Singh Dhoni remains a prominent figure in discussions about team composition,” Ashwin added.

Fleming joined CSK as a player in the inaugural IPL season in 2008 and transitioned to head coach in 2009. Over the past 17 years, this partnership has established one of the most respected and consistent franchises in cricket.

Under Fleming's leadership, CSK has secured five IPL titles and two Champions League Twenty20 championships. The team has reached the playoffs a record 12 times and has participated in 10 IPL finals.
