Ashwin Highlights Bumrah's Importance Beyond Wickets

In Mumbai, former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has pointed out that the ability of Jasprit Bumrah, the Mumbai Indians' (MI) fast bowler, to deliver precise yorkers and control the run rate is far more crucial than merely taking wickets, particularly in high-scoring environments like the Wankhede Stadium.

According to CricViz, Bumrah has not claimed a wicket in his last five innings during the Indian Premier League (IPL). Over these matches, he has bowled a total of 122 deliveries, marking the longest stretch without a wicket in his IPL career.

During MI's recent encounter against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at Wankhede, Bumrah also failed to take a wicket, finishing with figures of 0/35 in 4 overs. Nevertheless, he was MI's most economical bowler as RCB amassed a staggering 240 runs for 4 wickets in their 20 overs.

On social media platform X, Ashwin expressed that fixating on Bumrah's wicketless streak could be detrimental to MI's performance. He emphasized that Bumrah's true contribution lies in his ability to bowl tight yorkers and limit runs, especially in venues like Wankhede.

"The narrative surrounding Bumrah's lack of wickets can negatively impact the team's performance! His skill in executing yorkers and restricting the opposition's scoring is even more vital than chasing wickets, particularly in places like Wankhede," Ashwin remarked.

He further noted that in T20 cricket, the ability to take wickets is often a result of effective bowling partnerships, urging teams to focus on collective pressure and teamwork rather than individual statistics.

"When bowlers can't deliver consecutive overs, their wicket-taking potential relies on their teammates who set them up. After years of T20 cricket, the concept of bowling in partnerships as a cohesive unit is still a fundamental aspect for bowling teams," Ashwin added.

Despite his recent wicketless streak in the IPL, Bumrah has maintained an economy rate above 10 in only two matches: against Punjab Kings in the IPL 2025 Qualifier and against Rajasthan Royals in the current season.

Jasprit Bumrah's last five IPL innings:

0/40 (4) vs PBKS, Ahmedabad

0/35 (4) vs KKR, Wankhede

0/21 (4) vs DC, Delhi

0/32 (3) vs RR, Guwahati

0/35 (4) vs RCB, Wankhede.
