Rajasthan Royals Triumph Over Punjab Kings in IPL 2026 Showdown
Rajasthan Royals Celebrate Team Effort in Victory
New Chandigarh (Punjab) [India] - April 29: Following their impressive victory against the Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals (RR) head coach Kumar Sangakkara praised the team's overall performance, emphasizing the contributions from both batsmen and bowlers during their IPL 2026 encounter on Tuesday night.
Reflecting on the match, Sangakkara acknowledged that RR's bowling was not up to par at the beginning but commended the team's resilience. He stated, “We were slightly off with our bowling strategies at first, but the way we rallied back into the game, particularly with our two spinners and Jofra, along with support from Nandre and Brijesh, was remarkable,” during the post-match press briefing.
The RR coach recognized the attention on standout players but highlighted the strength of the entire batting lineup. “While Vaibhav is an exceptional player and draws a lot of focus, our team includes top talents like Dhruv, Yash, Riyan, Donovan Ferreira, Dubey, Jadeja, and Shanaka. It’s always gratifying when someone shines,” he remarked.
Sangakkara also praised impact substitute Dubey, noting the challenges of performing under uncertain match conditions. “Coming in as an impact substitute is incredibly tough. You’re unsure if you’ll play, yet he maintained exceptional focus and made a significant contribution in a challenging scenario,” he added, also commending Donovan Ferreira's efforts.
He pointed out Riyan Parag’s pivotal innings, calling it a crucial moment for regaining momentum. “Riyan’s brief innings was just what we needed to shift the momentum back in our favor,” Sangakkara said, labeling the victory as a “team effort.”
Discussing the challenge of facing a top-ranked team, Sangakkara emphasized that the focus remained on their own preparations rather than the opponent's ranking. “When preparing for a match, the focus is on what needs to be done rather than the standings,” he explained.
He also acknowledged the performances of emerging players, particularly Brijesh, praising his composure despite limited experience. “For someone without first-class cricket experience, his awareness has been impressive. Clarity under pressure is vital, and he will continue to improve,” Sangakkara noted.
Batting first, PBKS scored 222/4, thanks to half-centuries from Marcus Stoinis (62* off 22 balls, including four boundaries and six sixes) and Prabhsimran Singh (59 off 44 balls, with six fours and a six).
During the chase, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (43 off 16 balls, with three fours and five sixes) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (51 off 27 balls, with seven fours and a six) set the tone with a 51-run partnership.
A crucial fifth-wicket partnership of 77 runs between Donovan Ferreira (52* off 26 balls, with six fours and three sixes) and Shubham Dubey (31* off 12 balls, with three fours and two sixes) secured the win with four balls remaining.
Despite the defeat, PBKS remains at the top of the table with 13 points from six wins, a no result, and a loss, while RR climbs to third place with six wins and three losses, totaling 12 points.
