Rajasthan Royals' Riyan Parag Reflects on Victory and Areas for Improvement
Riyan Parag's Insights Post-Match
Mullanpur (Punjab) [India] - After leading his team to a victory against the Gujarat Titans in the eliminator, Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag praised Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for his outstanding performance. However, he expressed that the team should have aimed for a higher total, ideally reaching 260 runs, and emphasized the need to enhance their innings finishing skills.
Under Parag's leadership, RR is now on the brink of securing a spot in the IPL finals against the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Sooryavanshi's explosive 97 runs off just 29 balls, combined with impressive performances from Jofra Archer and Nandre Burger during the powerplay, helped RR overcome a formidable Sunrisers Hyderabad team.
In his post-match comments, Riyan mentioned his desire for perfection, noting that while the game may not be flawless, there is always room for improvement. He highlighted the need for the team to capitalize on strong starts, like the one provided by Sooryavanshi, to finish innings more effectively. Despite this, he was pleased with the bowling performance, stating, 'We held our calm even when they scored quickly in the early overs.'
Regarding his approach with Sooryavanshi, Riyan stated that he prefers to give him space to enjoy his batting, allowing him to focus on practice without pressure. 'He loves batting, so we ensure he gets ample practice at the nets,' he added.
Parag also noted that the pressure of their final two league matches being must-win situations has motivated the team to elevate their performance. 'When everything is on the line, everyone tends to work harder,' he explained.
He commended pacer Jofra Archer for his continued excellence, achieving another three-wicket haul, bringing his season total to 24. Riyan referred to Archer as 'one of the best in world cricket' and emphasized that he should not be burdened with additional instructions.
Reflecting on his own fitness, Riyan mentioned his hamstring issues but assured that he would be ready for the upcoming Qualifier against GT on Friday, opting to rest instead of practicing.
In the match, after SRH opted to bat first, Sooryavanshi's explosive innings, along with Dhruv Jurel's 50 runs, propelled RR to a total of 243/8. In response, SRH struggled, collapsing to 57/4 during the powerplay, despite Ishan Kishan's brief resistance. Archer and Burger played pivotal roles in restricting SRH to just 196 runs in 19.2 overs. Although Nitish Kumar Reddy and Salil Arora attempted to revive the innings with a partnership, Ravindra Jadeja's bowling sealed the match for RR.
Sooryavanshi was awarded the 'Player of the Match' for his remarkable performance.
