Rajasthan Royals End Punjab Kings' Winning Streak in Thrilling IPL Encounter
Rajasthan Royals Triumph Over Punjab Kings
As fans braced for the anticipated 'Orange Alert' in Mullanpur, it was the 'Pink Storm' from Rajasthan Royals that ultimately disrupted Punjab Kings' winning momentum at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh PCA International Stadium.
The Kings, known for their strong batting lineup, faced their first defeat of the season, succumbing to the Royals by six wickets. This marked the second occasion at home where the Kings' bowlers allowed their rivals to surpass the 200-run threshold. Nevertheless, the Kings wrapped up their home campaign with three victories, achieving their best-ever IPL record at this venue before relocating to the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamsala.
On this particular evening, Donovan Ferreira from the Royals scored 52 runs off 26 balls, while substitute Shubham Dubey contributed 31 runs off just 12 balls, leading their team to chase down a target of 223 with four balls remaining. However, it was the young Indian talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi who set the stage for this victory with a stunning 43 runs off only 16 balls, which included three boundaries and five sixes, delivering a tough lesson to the Kings' bowlers.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, who opened the innings, scored 51 runs off 27 balls, hitting seven boundaries and one six. Sooryavanshi faced off against Arshdeep Singh, a two-time T20 World Cup champion, who managed to deliver two consecutive yorkers, marking the only dot balls Sooryavanshi encountered. On the third delivery, he launched a massive six, punishing Marco Jansen and Lockie Ferguson as the Royals raced to 50 runs in just 19 balls, with Sooryavanshi contributing a significant 43 runs before being caught by Suryansh Shedge while attempting another big shot off Arshdeep.
Following Sooryavanshi's dismissal, Jaiswal ensured the runs kept flowing. Yuzvendra Chahal provided some respite for the Kings by taking three wickets for 36 runs, dismissing Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel (20), and Riyan Parag (29). However, Ferreira and Dubey continued to build on the momentum. With 71 runs needed off the last six overs, Ferreira's unbeaten 52 was crucial. He skillfully targeted the bowlers, including Arshdeep, Ferguson, and Jansen. In the 18th over, Ferguson bowled tightly, but a boundary off the last ball marked the beginning of the Kings' decline, as Ferreira and Dubey collectively hit nine fours and five sixes.
In a powerful display, Marcus Stoinis, elevated in the batting order due to Shashank Singh's absence, was in exceptional form. He scored a rapid half-century off just 20 balls, launching a fierce attack against Brijesh Sharma in the final over, accumulating 24 runs in boundaries and sixes. Stoinis finished with an impressive 62 runs off 22 balls, including four fours and six sixes, helping the Kings reach a total of 222/4 in their 20 overs—marking their third score exceeding 200 at this ground.
Prabhsimran Singh played a measured innings, scoring 59 runs off 44 balls. His partnership with Cooper Connolly (30 runs off 14 balls) was promising but did not last long. Credit goes to Yash Raj, the tall leg-spinner who varied his pace effectively, keeping the Kings in check until the 16th over with figures of 2/41. Even Shreyas Iyer (30) contributed a brief cameo, taking 27 balls to reach his score. Ultimately, it was Stoinis who dominated the latter stages, as the Royals' bowlers conceded 55 runs in the final three overs.
