Rajasthan Royals Dominate Chennai Super Kings in IPL Opener
Rajasthan Royals Secure Convincing Victory
Guwahati (Assam) [India], March 30: A stellar performance from Jofra Archer, Ravindra Jadeja, and Nandre Burger, combined with a remarkable half-century from Vaibhav Suryavanshi, propelled Rajasthan Royals (RR) to an impressive eight-wicket victory over the five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) season opener on Monday.
Choosing to bowl first, RR's bowlers made life difficult for CSK, with Archer (2/19), Burger (2/26), and Jadeja (2/18) restricting them to a mere 57/6 at one point. Contributions from Jamie Overton (43 runs off 36 balls, including two fours and two sixes), Kartik Sharma (18), and Sarfaraz Khan (17) allowed CSK to reach 127 runs in 19.4 overs before losing all their wickets.
Suryavanshi (52 runs off 17 balls, featuring four boundaries and five sixes) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (38* off 36 balls, with three fours and a six) formed a rapid 75-run partnership, setting the stage for a straightforward chase.
In pursuit of 128 runs, Suryavanshi and Jaiswal began aggressively, scoring 18 runs off Matt Henry in the opening over, with Suryavanshi hitting a couple of fours and a six. He was briefly let off the hook when Kartik Sharma dropped a catch.
RR's momentum was unstoppable as Suryavanshi added more boundaries, reaching the team's 50-run mark in just five overs.
The 15-year-old Suryavanshi showcased his talent against seasoned players, hitting two massive sixes off Afghanistan's Noor Ahmed and achieving his fifty in just 15 balls, making it the second-fastest fifty for an RR player, following Jaiswal's record of 13 balls against KKR in 2023. Jaiswal watched from the non-striker's end as Suryavanshi dazzled.
Anshul Kamboj eventually ended Suryavanshi's innings, dismissing him for 52 runs off 17 balls, leaving RR at 75/1 in 6.2 overs.
The onslaught continued as Dhruv Jurel and Jaiswal attacked Jamie Overton, hitting three fours in the eighth over. Jurel maintained the aggression with two consecutive fours against Kamboj before being dismissed for 18 runs off nine balls. RR stood at 99/2 in 8.3 overs.
RR crossed the 100-run mark in 8.4 overs.
By the end of the 10 overs, RR had scored 106/2, with skipper Riyan Parag (6*) and Jaiswal (25*) still at the crease.
Jaiswal (38* off 36 balls, with three fours and a six) and Parag (14*) led RR to victory in just 12.1 overs.
Earlier, RR's bowling attack, spearheaded by Nandre Burger and Jofra Archer alongside Ravindra Jadeja, left CSK struggling in their innings during the IPL 2026 season opener.
Burger (2/26), Archer (2/19), and Jadeja (2/18) collectively took six wickets, bowling CSK out for a mere 127 runs in 19.4 overs.
After winning the toss, RR captain Riyan Parag opted to field, and his bowlers quickly justified the decision by dismantling CSK's top order with aggressive seam bowling.
CSK's innings began poorly, losing key players early. Sanju Samson (6 runs) was the first to go, falling to a brilliant delivery from Burger that uprooted his off-stump. CSK found themselves at 14/1 within two overs.
The situation worsened when captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was dismissed by Jofra Archer for just six runs, leaving CSK at 19/2 in three overs. The collapse continued as Ayush Mhatre fell for a golden duck, caught behind off a bouncer from Burger, making it 19/3 in 3.1 overs.
Matthew Short (2) also fell quickly, with Sandeep Sharma claiming his wicket, reducing CSK to 38/4 in 5.3 overs. By the end of the Powerplay, CSK was struggling at 41/4.
The middle overs offered no relief for CSK. Ravindra Jadeja, facing his former team, made an immediate impact, taking two wickets in his first over, dismissing Sarfaraz Khan (17 runs) and Shivam Dube (6).
Sarfaraz, who seemed capable of stabilizing the innings, was trapped LBW, while Dube's innings ended shortly after, leaving CSK in dire straits at 57/6 after 8 overs.
Kartik Sharma attempted to rebuild but fell to Brijesh Sharma after scoring 18 runs off 15 balls. CSK's eighth wicket fell when Jofra Archer took his second wicket, leaving CSK at 82/8 in 13 overs.
Ravi Bishnoi joined the wicket-takers, dismissing Matt Henry, leaving CSK at 94/9 in 16 overs.
Jamie Overton provided some resistance, scoring 43 runs off 36 balls (with two fours and two sixes), helping CSK surpass the 100-run mark in 17.1 overs, but he was run out as CSK was bowled out for 127 in 19.4 overs.
Brief Scores: CSK: 127 in 19.4 overs (Jamie Overton 43, Kartik Sharma 18, Jofra Archer 2/19) lost to RR: 128/2 in 12.1 overs (Vaibhav Suryavanshi 52, Yashasvi Jaiswal 38*, Anshul Kamboj 2/27).
