Rajasthan Royals' Vice-Captain Announcement

During their IPL match against the Delhi Capitals at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on May 1, Rajasthan Royals (RR) officially named their vice-captain. Riyan Parag had to leave the field due to a fitness concern while DC was chasing a target, necessitating a temporary captain. Parag had taken over the captaincy after Sanju Samson's exit before the 2026 season, having previously led the team in eight matches during Samson's injury in the 2025 season. Jos Buttler was the vice-captain before being released prior to the 2025 mega auction, but he never had the opportunity to captain the team in a match.

Leadership Transition During the Match

With Parag sidelined, Yashasvi Jaiswal stepped up to lead the team. Initially, it seemed that Dhruv Jurel might take charge, but Jaiswal ultimately made the call to the umpire during a review. The 24-year-old was actively communicating with the bowlers, showcasing his leadership skills as Tushar Deshpande took the wicket of Nitish Rana (32 off 16) following a successful Decision Review System (DRS) appeal.

Parag's Selection as Captain

Before the season commenced, many anticipated that Jaiswal would be appointed captain, given his status as a prominent young Indian player. However, head coach Kumar Sangakkara disclosed that after a thorough evaluation, they determined Parag was the ideal choice. Five players, including Jaiswal, were interviewed for the role. Sangakkara stated, "We had strict criteria for selection and engaged in extensive discussions with all candidates. Riyan emerged as the top choice due to his maturity and vision for the team. He demonstrated a reflective approach during the challenging interview process, which set him apart from the others."

Parag's Injury Update

Post-match, Parag shared that he had sustained a hamstring injury, prompting his exit from the game. He remains optimistic that the injury is not severe. The Royals faced a seven-wicket defeat with five balls remaining. Their next match is scheduled against Gujarat Titans on May 9, and if Parag is unable to play, Jaiswal will lead the team for the first time in an IPL match.
