Rajasthan Royals Captain Riyan Parag Analyzes First IPL Loss Against Sunrisers Hyderabad
Riyan Parag Reflects on Team's Performance
Rajasthan Royals' skipper Riyan Parag attributed his team's initial defeat in the IPL season to several factors, particularly the struggle of his typically explosive batsmen to adapt to the pace of the deliveries from Sunrisers Hyderabad.
In a disappointing outing with the ball, the Royals' top order, featuring Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, and Dhruv Jurel, collectively faltered, leading to a significant 57-run loss on Monday.
Parag expressed at the post-match press conference, "It was a combination of various elements. We seemed caught off guard by the ball's pace as it left the bowler's hand and how it reacted off the pitch."
He elaborated, "Vaibhav anticipated a quicker delivery, but it turned out to be stickier. Dhruv faced a ball that nipped back in, and Jaiswal, who usually connects 9 out of 10 times, missed his shot this time."
Regarding his own performance, he mentioned, "I received a very full delivery that I couldn't capitalize on. While I wouldn't say we were unlucky, it was a blend of many factors that hindered our ability to connect with the ball."
As the new captain of the Royals this season, Parag acknowledged that the bowlers fell short in execution, despite their evident skill.
He noted, "Initially, we were doing fine, but during the middle overs, they scored at least 30 runs more than expected. We could have explored better options, utilized the pitch more effectively, and incorporated slower balls or wide yorkers."
Parag emphasized, "The execution was lacking, but I have no doubts about the quality of our bowlers."
He also praised the young talent Sooryavanshi, expressing confidence in his future potential.
Parag stated, "In a decade, he will be my age, so I can't predict that far ahead, but for now, I hope he maintains a strong mental state."
He added, "He should continue to win matches and play as flamboyantly as he has been, aiming for a title and hopefully representing India soon." Sooryavanshi, who debuted in the IPL last year, has participated in 12 matches over two seasons.
Parag remarked, "Every time you step onto the field, you gain experience. Despite being just 15, he has accumulated significant experience from last year."
He concluded, "Even from the sidelines, you learn about the game and the IPL dynamics. Having played seven games and maintaining momentum through the Under-19 World Cup and Asia Cups, he has scored runs consistently, including some big innings."
