Punjab Kings Triumph Over Mumbai Indians: Shreyas Iyer Praises Prabhsimran Singh's Growth
Punjab Kings Secure Victory Against Mumbai Indians
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India] - Following their recent victory against the Mumbai Indians (MI), Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer commended opener Prabhsimran Singh for his impressive development this season.
MI set a challenging target of 194/6, thanks to a remarkable 122-run partnership between centurion Quinton de Kock and half-centurion Naman Dhir. However, quick fifties from Iyer and Prabhsimran, who combined for a 139-run stand for the third wicket after a shaky start, propelled PBKS to their fourth win of the season, allowing them to overtake the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the points table.
During the post-match interview, Iyer expressed his optimism, stating, “We are feeling confident and optimistic moving forward. Our performance has been phenomenal. Each match is crucial, and it’s a team effort. I’m pleased with our comprehensive win. Prabhsimran has elevated his game compared to last season, where he often swung wildly. Now, he demonstrates maturity and knows how to finish games effectively.”
This season, Prabhsimran has emerged as PBKS's leading run-scorer, ranking fifth overall with 211 runs in four innings, averaging 70.33 and boasting a strike rate of nearly 173, including two fifties. In his breakout season last year, he accumulated 549 runs in 17 matches at an average of 32.29, with a strike rate of 160.52, featuring four fifties.
Iyer highlighted a pivotal relay catch he made with Xavier Bartlett, which he believes shifted momentum in their favor. He noted that his team often manages to regain control when situations seem dire.
“My catch was crucial in turning things around (laughs), but we have a tendency to do that. We experienced something similar against SRH. It’s important to stay present and enjoy the moment. We haven’t finalized our strategy for setting totals, but we’ve been fortunate with the tosses so far. Our players are eager to express themselves on the field. Continuous improvement is key, and we focus on ourselves, which has been our guiding principle. It’s wonderful to see the crowds growing and the fans showing their support,” he added.
With this victory, PBKS has climbed to the top of the table with four wins and one no result, totaling nine points, while MI sits at ninth place with one win and four losses.
Batting first, MI managed to score 195/6, driven by a 122-run partnership between Quinton de Kock (112* off 60 balls, including eight fours and seven sixes) and Naman Dhir (50 off 31 balls, with three fours and three sixes). Arshdeep Singh was the standout bowler for PBKS, taking 3 wickets for 22 runs. Despite losing early wickets, Prabhsimran Singh (80* off 39 balls, with 11 fours and two sixes) and the consistently performing Iyer (66 off 35 balls, with five fours and four sixes) guided PBKS to victory in just 16.3 overs.
