Punjab Kings Reflect on IPL 2026 Challenges and Triumphs

Chandigarh [India], August 13: Trevor Gonsalves, the assistant bowling coach for Punjab Kings (PBKS), discussed the team's mid-season challenges, emphasizing that they did not let their guard down despite facing six consecutive losses after a promising start in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.
The Kings' season was marked by a stark contrast; they began with six victories but then encountered a six-match losing streak. This downturn dropped them to fifth place, with only one win in their last seven matches. Gonsalves noted that the coaching staff maintained their focus on the process, preventing any panic within the team.
Having finished as runners-up in the previous season, expectations were high for PBKS to secure another top-four finish in 2026, if not a top-two position. Unfortunately, they fell short of these aspirations.
In an interview, Gonsalves acknowledged the difficulties faced during this period, as the team awaited a crucial win, but he reiterated that complacency was not an issue.
“Everyone thought, ‘Okay, that one win will come.’ There’s nothing complacent about it,” he stated.
This season, IPL 2026 set a record with 53 team totals exceeding 200 runs. Both Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad achieved this feat eight times each.
Additionally, PBKS made headlines by successfully chasing down 265 runs against Delhi Capitals, marking the highest successful run chase in T20 cricket history.
Gonsalves emphasized that the team remained focused and did not become complacent, highlighting their ability to chase down significant totals, including scores around 250. He admitted that PBKS could have secured one or two more victories but maintained that the team gave their all despite the outcomes.
“If 200 runs were being scored, we were also chasing 200 runs. We’ve chased totals of 250 and more. It wasn’t complacency; it’s part of the game. We should have won a couple more matches, but it didn’t happen. We gave our best,” he explained.
He also mentioned that the atmosphere in the dressing room remained steady despite the losses, asserting that the blame for the losing streak could not be placed solely on the bowlers. He pointed out that while the top five batters performed well during their winning streak, their productivity declined in the latter half of the season, indicating that the team's performance was a collective effort.
“The mood in the dressing room was completely normal, just like any other game. Many would attribute the losses to the bowlers. In the first six matches, our top batsmen scored heavily, accumulating over 1000 runs. In the second half, their scoring dropped significantly. So, it’s not fair to solely blame the bowlers,” he concluded.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) ultimately claimed the championship, winning the IPL title for the second consecutive season.
