Punjab Kings Maintain IPL 2026 Lead Despite Loss to Gujarat Titans
Punjab Kings Hold Top Spot in IPL Standings
In Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on May 4, Punjab Kings (PBKS) continue to lead the IPL 2026 standings with 13 points from nine matches, even after suffering a four-wicket defeat against Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
The Titans successfully chased down a target of 163 runs, clinching victory with just one ball remaining in a match that proved to be fiercely competitive on a challenging pitch that favored bowlers.
Despite the setback, the atmosphere within the Punjab camp remained optimistic, with Suryansh Shedge taking center stage during the post-match press conference following his impressive batting display.
Shedge excelled on a pitch that presented inconsistent bounce, scoring 57 runs off 29 balls at a remarkable strike rate of 196.55, including 3 fours and 5 sixes, providing Punjab Kings with a solid chance to set a competitive score. His innings showcased his ability to adapt to the conditions and trust his instincts.
Reflecting on his journey to the playing XI, Shedge stated, "I wouldn’t say I was waiting, I was preparing. The time on the sidelines benefitted me and allowed me to get ready both physically and mentally. Ricky Ponting and Shreyas Iyer have consistently advised me that when the opportunity arises, you must seize it. That’s what I aimed to do today."
On a pitch where scoring was challenging, Shedge's strategy was noteworthy. He explained, "My primary goal was to spend as much time at the crease as possible, which made things easier as I progressed. On such surfaces, a batter needs to take their time before attempting expansive shots. Aiming for 240 or 250 was unrealistic; the pitch simply wouldn’t allow it."
Punjab Kings managed to post a total of 163 runs, which, while slightly short, was still viewed positively by Shedge. "We could have perhaps added 20 to 25 more runs, but I believe 163 was a competitive score. We gave our all, and there are numerous positives to take from this match," he remarked.
In terms of bowling, Arshdeep Singh delivered an exceptional performance, allowing only 24 runs in 4 overs with an impressive economy rate of 6.00 while taking 2 wickets, keeping Punjab Kings in contention until the end. Vijaykumar Vyshak also shone, claiming the vital wickets of Jos Buttler and Sai Sudarshan while conceding just 31 runs in 4 overs at an economy rate of 7.75. Shedge attributed Vyshak's success to strategic planning, stating, "Just before the powerplay concluded, our bowling coach instructed Vyshak to bowl at that hard length, and you could see how effectively he executed that plan."
Punjab Kings are set to face Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 6, aiming to bounce back and extend their lead at the top of the IPL table.
