Punjab Kings Aim for Continued Success in IPL 2026 with Positive Team Spirit
Punjab Kings' Strong Start in IPL 2026
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], April 6: Following their second-place finish last season, the Punjab Kings have kicked off IPL 2026 with two back-to-back victories. Their spin bowling coach, Sairaj Bahutule, attributes this early success to a supportive atmosphere within the team.
In a conversation before their upcoming match against the Kolkata Knight Riders, Bahutule emphasized the importance of a steady approach and a robust internal culture. He remarked, “The environment has been fantastic since last year, and we are progressing steadily in the tournament.”
Bahutule, a former international cricketer with experience in Tests and ODIs, has established himself in the domestic coaching scene. At Punjab Kings, he collaborates with a seasoned coaching staff that includes head coach Ricky Ponting, along with Brad Haddin and James Hopes.
Discussing the Impact Player rule, Bahutule expressed his approval, stating, “It allows an additional player to showcase their skills. While opportunities for all-rounders may be limited, top bowlers and batters can now demonstrate their abilities. Having 12 players instead of 11 is a positive change.”
He also praised the collaborative spirit among the coaching staff, saying, “Ponting, Hopes, and Haddin are exceptional coaches. Working under Ricky has been a pleasure; he provides the necessary space for growth. James Hopes, our fast-bowling coach, is very supportive, and Brad Haddin brings invaluable experience.”
Bahutule highlighted the learning opportunities that come from working with diverse coaching styles, noting, “As a coach, it’s a continuous learning experience. I learn from them, and they learn from me, which makes it enjoyable.”
One of the standout players for Punjab has been 22-year-old Australian all-rounder Cooper Connolly, who made a significant impact with a match-winning 72 on his IPL debut against the Gujarat Titans, followed by a crucial 36 against the Chennai Super Kings.
Backing the young talent, Bahutule acknowledged Ponting’s confidence in Connolly during the auction, stating, “Ricky believed in him as a player and an all-rounder. He has demonstrated his potential in these two matches, and I’m confident he has a bright future ahead in Australia.”
Bahutule also commended captain Shreyas Iyer, under whose leadership Punjab finished as runners-up last season. He has witnessed Iyer’s development from his early days in Mumbai and believes he possesses the qualities to lead at the highest level.
“I’ve seen Shreyas evolve as both a player and a leader. I believe he has the temperament and responsibility needed to lead India in the future. He ensures that players feel comfortable and is always there for them. He is not only a great leader but also a wonderful person,” he added.
The Punjab Kings are set to face the Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Monday, and Bahutule is optimistic about extending their winning streak and building on their strong start to the season.
