Punjab Kings Set New T20 Record

In a thrilling display of batting prowess, Punjab Kings made history by completing the highest successful chase in T20 cricket, surpassing a formidable target of 265 runs to defeat Delhi Capitals by six wickets during an IPL match on Saturday.

KL Rahul showcased his exceptional skills, scoring a magnificent 152 runs, marking the third-highest individual score in IPL history, while Nitish Rana contributed a solid 91 runs, helping Delhi Capitals set a daunting total of 264 for 2 after they chose to bat first.

During the chase, Punjab's explosive opening duo, Prabhsimran Singh (76) and Priyansh Arya (43), set the stage ablaze, amassing 126 runs in just 42 balls, establishing a strong foundation for their sixth victory of the season.

Captain Shreyas Iyer, who was dropped twice by Karun Nair, finished the match with an unbeaten 71 runs off 36 balls, guiding PBKS to victory with seven balls remaining.

Interestingly, the previous record for the highest successful chase in T20 and IPL history was also held by PBKS, who chased down 262 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024.

With this win, Punjab Kings remain unbeaten this season, leading the points table with 13 points from seven matches.

The match was a run-fest, featuring 49 boundaries and 33 sixes, with only six wickets falling, highlighting the struggles of the bowlers.

The visitors displayed remarkable composure, building on their previous performance where they set the highest total of the season.

Local talent Priyansh and Prabhsimran consistently cleared the boundary, with the latter hitting six fours in a single over against Mukesh Kumar.

There were tense moments during the chase when Delhi Capitals' pacer Lungi Ngidi was injured while attempting a catch off Arya's bat, requiring him to be stretchered off the field after a lengthy delay.

Both teams struggled with fielding, as dropped catches and misfields contributed to their challenges.

Earlier in the match, Delhi Capitals, batting first for the first time this season, came out aggressively, attacking every delivery and accumulating a total of 29 fours and 13 sixes, setting the highest score of the 2026 IPL season.

Rahul's innings, which struck at over 200, included a variety of classical shots, making it the highest score ever by an Indian in IPL history.

With this performance, he became only the third player to surpass the 150-run mark in IPL, following Chris Gayle and Brendon McCullum.

Rahul capitalized on his two reprieves, forming a remarkable 220-run partnership with Rana for the second wicket, the second-largest partnership in IPL history, trailing only the 229-run stand by Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers.

Rana appeared comfortable on his home ground, scoring 91 runs off 44 balls, including 11 fours and 4 sixes, as the duo maintained a rapid scoring pace.

Rahul set the tone early, hitting consecutive boundaries in the second over, while Pathum Nissanka added a well-timed four.

Despite an early wicket with Nissanka's dismissal, Punjab's bowlers struggled to find their rhythm, compounded by several misfields.

Rahul and Rana took charge, punishing loose deliveries and propelling Delhi to their best powerplay score of the season at 68 for one, before accumulating 145 runs in the middle overs.

Rana shifted gears dramatically, scoring 28 runs off Australian pacer Xavier Bartlett in the 12th over, hitting two sixes and four fours in a remarkable sequence.

At the other end, Rahul continued his assault, targeting Vijaykumar Vyshak in the 16th over, where he hit three sixes and a four, further solidifying Delhi's dominance in the match.
