Punjab Kings Achieve Historic IPL Chase Against Delhi Capitals
Historic Victory for Punjab Kings
New Delhi [India] - April 25: Yuzvendra Chahal, the spinner for Punjab Kings (PBKS), expressed that their batting lineup will pose a significant challenge for any opposing team after PBKS made history at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. They successfully chased down an impressive target of 265 runs, defeating Delhi Capitals (DC) by six wickets with seven balls remaining.
This remarkable achievement marks the highest successful chase in Indian Premier League (IPL) history, surpassing their previous record of 262 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024.
From the outset, the Kings displayed aggressive intent. Prabhsimran Singh set the pace with an explosive 76 runs off just 26 balls, boasting a strike rate of 292.3, while Priyansh Arya contributed a rapid 43 runs off 17 balls at a strike rate of 252.9. Their partnership led to a remarkable powerplay, accumulating 116 runs without losing a wicket in the first six overs, transforming a seemingly insurmountable target into a confident chase.
Chahal reflected on the crucial momentum generated by the openers, stating that their strong start provided the team with essential confidence during the middle overs, putting pressure on the bowlers from the opposition. He remarked, 'The momentum from Prabhsimran and Priyansh in the first six overs was vital for us to chase such a large total. It will be challenging for any team to contend with our batting lineup.'
Following the dismissals of the openers, captain Shreyas Iyer stepped up, scoring a composed 71 runs off 36 balls, leading the team to victory with a sense of assurance. The innings was characterized by an impressive display of power hitting, with 20 fours and 20 sixes contributing to a total of 200 runs from boundaries alone.
Chahal noted that the Punjab Kings approached the chase with a positive mindset, fully aware of their batting capabilities on a favorable pitch. He emphasized that the explosive start from Prabhsimran and Priyansh was crucial, and after the powerplay, they felt in complete control of the match.
'We embraced the target and felt optimistic before our innings. We are confident in our batting quality. It was a pitch conducive to batting, and we needed a strong start to chase this total, which we achieved and more from Prabhsimran and Priyansh. After the first six overs, we knew we were in command,' he stated.
Chahal also acknowledged the significant influence of head coach Ricky Ponting on Prabhsimran Singh, crediting his fearless batting style and dedication over the years for his outstanding performances. He humorously added that he is pleased to have Prabhsimran on his team, as it spares him from bowling to him in matches.
'Ricky has played a pivotal role in his development. Bowling to him in the nets is quite challenging, especially during the powerplay due to his fearless approach. Before the innings, he believed that if they could score 264, we could do the same. Today's performances are a testament to the hard work he has put into his batting over the years. I'm glad he's on my team so I don't have to bowl to him in competitive matches,' Chahal remarked.
This victory extends the Punjab Kings' unbeaten streak to seven matches. With 13 points from seven games, they are currently at the top of the Tata IPL 2026 standings. The Kings will return to the New International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh to face the Rajasthan Royals on April 28.
