Punjab FC Begins IFA Shield Journey
Punjab FC is set to launch their IFA Shield 2026-27 season against Calcutta Customs Club at Barasat Stadium this Sunday. The match, part of Group II, is slated for a 2:30 PM start, marking a significant moment as the Shers embark on their inaugural campaign in this historic tournament.
This match will also be the first official game for the newly appointed head coach, Pavlos Dermitzakis. The Greek manager has assembled a refreshed squad of 24 players for the tournament, blending youthful talent with seasoned domestic players and strategic international signings.
The foreign players include the experienced European defender Patrick Gerard Bahanack and newly signed forwards Diego Raposo, Alfred Planas Moya, and Raphael Messi Bouli, who are anticipated to enhance the team's strength, speed, and scoring capabilities.
To maintain tactical discipline against their local rivals, Punjab FC will depend on a solid domestic foundation. Goalkeeper Arshdeep Singh will anchor the defense, supported by Muhammed Uvais, Bishu Sharma, and Suresh Meitei. In midfield, Nikhil Prabhu and Khaiminthang Lhungdim are expected to be crucial in controlling the game and facilitating transitions.
The squad also highlights the club's dedication to nurturing young talent, featuring several promising players from the Roundglass Football Academy. Notable graduates like Manglenthang Kipgen, Muhammad Suhail, Arshvir Singh, and Ayush Deshwal have been promoted to the first team, offering them a vital opportunity to demonstrate their growth from grassroots to professional football.
Calcutta Customs will enter the match as the underdogs, following a 3-1 defeat to the reigning ISL champions, East Bengal FC. Despite taking an early lead with a goal from Riki Gharami in the 12th minute on a challenging, muddy pitch, they were ultimately outmatched by the Red & Gold Brigade.
In anticipation of his managerial debut, Dermitzakis expressed enthusiasm, stating, “We are thrilled to kick off our IFA Shield journey. This prestigious tournament presents an excellent chance to assess our revamped squad in a competitive setting early in the season. We have crafted a strong blend of experienced international players, established domestic leaders, and talented youth from our Roundglass Academy.”
