Piyush Chawla Lauds Akeal Hosein's Impact on CSK's Bowling Unit
Chawla Commends Hosein's Bowling Skills
New Delhi [India], April 15: Piyush Chawla, a former Indian cricketer and member of the 2011 ODI World Cup-winning squad, has expressed admiration for Akeal Hosein, the spinner for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Chawla noted that Hosein's addition to the playing XI has greatly enhanced the team's bowling capabilities, especially during the powerplay overs where they had previously faced challenges.
Chawla emphasized Hosein's knack for maintaining tight lines and lengths, which effectively limits scoring chances and puts pressure on opposing batsmen. He also mentioned that Hosein has excelled in similar roles for various teams in the IPL.
Despite a commendable performance, Chawla remarked that Hosein was somewhat unfortunate in the match against Kolkata Knight Riders, as a few dropped catches prevented him from taking potential wickets. He suggested that Hosein could have had a more favorable outcome on another day.
“Akeal Hosein is performing exceptionally well. Before his inclusion, CSK's bowling was not up to par. However, since he joined the team, he has effectively managed the Powerplay overs, an area where CSK had been conceding too many runs. His track record in the Powerplays for various teams and in the IPL speaks volumes. He consistently bowls good lengths and lines, making it difficult for batters to score. Unfortunately, he was unlucky against KKR, as two catches were dropped off his bowling. Otherwise, he could have easily secured two or three wickets. His bowling was outstanding,” Piyush Chawla stated during a segment on Star Sports.
After suffering three consecutive losses, CSK decided to bring Hosein into the playing XI. Since his arrival, the five-time champions have achieved back-to-back victories.
Although Hosein has taken only one wicket in his two matches this season, his presence has significantly bolstered CSK's power-play bowling, an area where they struggled in their initial three games.
In the match against Kolkata Knight Riders, Hosein concluded his spell by dismissing Angkrish Raghuvanshi but felt frustrated due to missed catching opportunities off Ajinkya Rahane's and Raghuvanshi's batting.
In the match, CSK scored 192 runs for the loss of five wickets in 20 overs, with notable performances from Sanju Samson (48 runs off 32 balls, including four boundaries and three sixes) and Dewald Brevis (41 runs off 29 balls, with four fours and two sixes). Kartik Tyagi also stood out with the ball, taking 2 wickets for 35 runs.
During the chase, KKR found themselves at 29 for 2, but a 50-run partnership between captain Ajinkya Rahane (28 runs off 22 balls, with two sixes) and Angkrish Raghuvanshi (27 runs off 19 balls, including three fours and a six) kept them in the game. However, a pivotal spell from Noor Ahmed saw KKR slump to 90 for 6, ultimately finishing their innings at 160 for 7.
KKR remains winless, having lost four matches and one resulting in no result, placing them at the bottom of the points table. Meanwhile, CSK has moved up to eighth place with four points.
