RCB's Stellar Performance Against MI

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], April 13: Following his impressive display that earned him the Player of the Match title, opener Phil Salt emphasized the importance of mental stability and making a significant impact during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) 18-run win against Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL 2026 match on Sunday.

During the post-match interview, Salt acknowledged that achieving consistency in T20 cricket involves navigating both highs and lows, and managing these fluctuations is crucial for success at the elite level.

“Honestly, I’m not entirely sure myself. There are several highs and many lows, and it’s essential not to get carried away by either. Staying as balanced as possible is key, and I’m just glad I could contribute positively for the team,” Salt remarked.

He elaborated on his aggressive batting style, particularly on pitches that favor batsmen, highlighting the necessity of applying pressure on the opposition throughout the innings.

“Absolutely. Some of these venues aren’t particularly bowler-friendly, so it’s vital to maintain the mindset of attacking the opposition. It’s also important to remember your strengths as a player. Being a match-winner is what it’s all about, isn’t it? I understand that scoring runs every game isn’t feasible for anyone, but if I can be impactful, then I’m on the right track,” he added.

Salt commended RCB’s overall batting effort but pointed out that there’s still potential for improvement, despite the impressive total achieved by the team.

“We did really well. To be honest, we probably had a bit more left in the tank. In the latter half of our innings, they managed to contain us effectively at times. So, there are promising signs for us as a batting unit. I think they bowled well during that phase,” he stated.

RCB triumphed over MI by 18 runs in a thrilling IPL 2026 encounter at Wankhede Stadium, driven by a powerful batting performance and timely breakthroughs in bowling.

Batting first, RCB delivered a near-flawless innings, amassing a formidable 240/4, thanks to explosive contributions from Phil Salt (78 off 36), Virat Kohli (50 off 38), and captain Rajat Patidar (53 off 20), along with a late surge from Tim David (34* off 16).

RCB started with a bang, as Salt and Kohli dominated the powerplay, reaching 71/0 in just six overs. Salt was particularly aggressive, hitting Mitchell Santner for 22 runs in a single over and reaching his half-century in just 25 balls. The pair formed a solid 120-run opening partnership in 10.5 overs, setting a strong foundation for a massive total.

After Salt’s dismissal, Patidar took over with a remarkable counterattack, scoring a rapid 50 off 17 balls and forming a quick 65-run partnership with Kohli. RCB crossed the 150-run mark in just 12.1 overs and surpassed 200 in 16.5 overs, maintaining a relentless scoring pace. Despite MI bowlers taking wickets at intervals, they struggled to halt the flow of runs as David’s late innings propelled RCB to 240/4.

In response, the Mumbai Indians started their chase of 241 strongly, with Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton reaching 62/0 in the powerplay. However, Rohit’s hamstring injury forced him to leave the field early, disrupting MI’s momentum.

RCB made crucial breakthroughs with Suyash Sharma dismissing Rickelton (37) and Tilak Varma (1) in the same over, shifting the momentum. At 99/2 after 10 overs, MI remained in contention but faced pressure from the increasing required run rate.

Further setbacks followed as Krunal Pandya took out Suryakumar Yadav (33), and Jacob Duffy dismissed skipper Hardik Pandya (40), who had briefly revived the chase with an aggressive innings. Rasikh Salam Dar then removed Naman Dhir, leaving MI in a precarious position at 154/5.

Despite the collapse, Sherfane Rutherford kept MI in the game with a brilliant unbeaten 71 off 31 balls, hitting nine sixes in a late onslaught. However, the target proved just beyond reach as Mumbai finished their innings at 222/5.

Suyash Sharma emerged as RCB’s standout bowler with two wickets.
