New Zealand Prepares for FIFA World Cup 2026 Opener Against Iran
New Zealand's Focused Approach Ahead of World Cup Match
Inglewood [US], June 15: Darren Bazeley, the head coach of New Zealand, emphasized that the team is approaching their FIFA World Cup 2026 opening match against Iran on Monday as just another game. This match occurs amidst ongoing tensions involving the US, Israel, and Iran.
As they prepare for the upcoming clash, Bazeley stated that New Zealand's approach remains consistent with their preparations for all international matches. He acknowledged the significance of the occasion, being a World Cup match, but reiterated that their primary goal is to perform well throughout the tournament.
“Honestly, we’re treating it like a regular game. Our preparation is the same for every international fixture, and we haven’t changed anything for this match. It’s a big game for us because it’s a World Cup match, and we aim to excel here,” Bazeley remarked.
New Zealand's captain, Chris Wood, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the team's complete focus on football. He noted that once they step onto the field, external circumstances are irrelevant.
“Our sole focus has been on football. Once you cross the white lines, nothing else matters,” Wood stated.
Iran, currently ranked 20th globally and undefeated in Asian qualifiers, enters the match in formidable form. However, Wood pointed out that the tournament has demonstrated that the differences between many teams are minimal, which boosts New Zealand's confidence, despite their 85th ranking.
“It’s thrilling that most matches have been closely contested, and every team has had a chance to win. That instills confidence in us,” he added.
This match marks New Zealand's first World Cup appearance in 16 years, with Bazeley noting that the squad has dedicated years to prepare for this opportunity.
“We’ve waited a long time to be here. We’re eager to get started,” he concluded.
