Nehal Wadhera Emphasizes Importance of Pre-Season Camp for Punjab Kings

New Chandigarh (Punjab) [India], August 14: Nehal Wadhera, a batter for Punjab Kings (PBKS), has underscored the significance of the franchise's pre-season training camp in New Chandigarh. He believes this initiative offers players an excellent opportunity to gear up for the upcoming domestic season and the next Indian Premier League (IPL) edition.

The 25-year-old left-handed batter spoke about the camp's role in bridging the gap between the IPL and the domestic calendar, emphasizing the necessity for high-quality, competitive practice.

Beginning on August 11 and running until August 15, PBKS has organized a five-day off-season training camp in New Chandigarh. The current roster includes six players: Prabhsimran Singh, Shashank Singh, Harpreet Brar, Pyla Avinash, Praveen Dubey, and Nehal Wadhera.

Wadhera remarked, “This is a fantastic initiative by Punjab Kings, especially considering the two to three months gap between the IPL and the domestic season. It allows us to prepare effectively, as practicing at home doesn’t provide the same level of competition.”

He noted that training with teammates and coaches in a professional setting significantly enhances a player's readiness.

The camp is being conducted under the guidance of the franchise's coaching staff, led by Trevor Gonsalves.

“While we do practice at home, being in this environment with our peers is incredibly beneficial. We learn from each other and our coaches, surrounded by the best, which makes a substantial difference before the domestic season and IPL,” he added.

Wadhera also mentioned that the camp prepares players for various match scenarios and helps identify and address weaknesses before the season kicks off.

“Every aspect of the game and potential scenarios we might face will be covered during this pre-season camp,” he stated.

Reflecting on Punjab Kings' underwhelming IPL 2026 performance, Wadhera acknowledged that the team struggled to maintain the momentum built in the tournament's early stages.

PBKS concluded their IPL 2026 journey in fifth place, securing seven wins out of 14 matches.

Under the leadership of captain Shreyas Iyer and head coach Ricky Ponting, the franchise had a strong start but faltered in the latter half, narrowly missing out on the playoffs.

“We began well, but we couldn’t capitalize on that momentum. The entire squad and coaching staff recognized that we were not performing as expected,” Wadhera explained.

He added that players and support staff consistently reviewed their performance to improve, although results didn’t always reflect their efforts.

“We aimed to learn from our mistakes, but when it came to execution, things didn’t go as planned,” he said.

Wadhera also reflected on his personal challenges during the season, expressing disappointment that his efforts did not yield the desired outcomes.

“I tried my best, but unfortunately, things didn’t unfold as I had hoped,” he admitted.

Despite the setbacks, the PBKS batter believes the team has gained crucial insights that could help them avoid similar pitfalls in the future.

“We were disheartened by our position in the points table compared to where we ended up in 2026. However, I’m glad we could learn valuable lessons from it,” he concluded.

Wadhera emphasized that Punjab Kings will focus on addressing their shortcomings from the previous season to ensure they start the next campaign with improved consistency and intensity.

“Next year, we’ll be aware of the areas we need to improve upon. We must bring our A-game from the very first match,” he stated.
