Nandre Burger's Impressive IPL Debut

Johannesburg, April 8 – Former South African fast bowler Rory Kleinveldt has praised Nandre Burger for his relentless pursuit of excellence on the field, emphasizing that he consistently aims to deliver his best performance, even under challenging conditions.

In the ongoing IPL 2026, Burger has made a significant impact while playing for the Rajasthan Royals (RR).

During the opening match of IPL 2026, he showcased his skills by taking 2 wickets for 26 runs, earning the Player of the Match title against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Guwahati, as reported by a media release.

Burger's first wicket was that of Sanju Samson, the recent T20 World Cup Player of the Tournament, whom he dismissed with a fast delivery clocking 140 km/h that pitched and seamed away, knocking over his off stump. Following that, he had Ayush Mhatre caught behind, putting him on the brink of a hat-trick.

Kleinveldt, who is currently the head coach of Western Province, has worked closely with Burger during the Cricket South Africa's 1-Day Cup leading up to the IPL and believes that the bowler's recent achievements are well-deserved.

"Nandre's performance in the opening game against CSK was no surprise to me after observing him bowl for Western Province. He consistently strives to deliver his best ball. This determination sets him apart from many other bowlers; even when conditions are not ideal, he seeks to make an impact, which is invaluable," Kleinveldt shared with SA20.

Burger also leads the bowling attack for the Joburg Super Kings in the SA20 league. Kleinveldt highlighted the importance of guidance from Super Kings' bowling coach Eric Simons in Burger's development, particularly in achieving consistency after a career marred by injuries.

"He has been collaborating closely with Eric," Kleinveldt noted, recalling that he shared the new ball with Burger towards the end of his own playing days.

"His primary challenge is to maintain a consistent run of games, strengthen his body, and simply bowl more overs," Kleinveldt explained.

"I believe he has realized the potential he displayed earlier, which is commendable, as many players struggle to do so. He has significantly improved his strength and has worked hard to refine his bowling action. Although he still faces injury issues, considering his pace of over 145 km/h, it’s understandable that it takes a toll on his body. The key for him moving forward is to play as much as possible to build resilience and ensure a longer career," Kleinveldt added.

Burger expressed his excitement about his performance in the Royals' opener, particularly relishing the opportunity to dismiss his former teammate, Samson.

"It feels fantastic to contribute to a victory, and I’m pleased to help us start strong. Winning the toss was advantageous. When you see matches with high scores, you need to strategize and prepare accordingly," Burger stated.

"My strategy against Sanju – and all batters – was simply to get them out. The delivery to Sanju had some natural variation; that’s all I can say. It’s uplifting to see smiles and positive energy within the team. This is a promising start, and I hope we can maintain this momentum," he added.

Nandre Burger and the Rajasthan Royals are set to carry their winning spirit into their upcoming match against RCB on Friday.
