Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 4: A remarkable partnership of 143 runs between Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton propelled the Mumbai Indians (MI) to a six-wicket victory over the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at Wankhede Stadium on Monday.
Currently, MI sits in ninth place with three wins and seven losses, while LSG is at the bottom of the table with two wins and seven losses.
Choosing to bowl first, MI faced a strong batting display from LSG, with Nicholas Pooran scoring 63 runs off 21 balls, including a four and eight sixes. Mitchell Marsh contributed 44 runs from 25 balls, while Himmat Singh added an unbeaten 40 runs from 31 balls, leading LSG to a total of 228/5.
In response, MI's chase was anchored by Rickelton, who scored 83 runs off 32 balls, and Rohit, who made 84 runs off 44 balls. Their partnership made the chase look effortless, as MI reached their target in just 18.4 overs.
Rickelton initiated the chase with two boundaries against Mohammed Shami in the opening over, setting the tone for MI's innings.
He continued to dominate the LSG bowling attack, helping MI reach 50 runs in just five overs, with Rickelton leading the charge.
In the final over of the powerplay, Rohit, returning from injury, joined the scoring spree, hitting Avesh Khan for 21 runs, including two fours and two sixes, concluding the powerplay with MI at 71 runs, with Rickelton (34*) and Rohit (36*) still at the crease.
The duo continued their assault, with Rickelton reaching his fifty in just 22 balls, while Rohit followed suit, scoring his second fifty of the season in 27 balls. MI crossed the 100-run mark in just over eight overs.
After 10 overs, MI stood at 127/0, with Rickelton (67*) and Rohit (58*) still unbeaten.
In the 11th over, Rickelton hit Mohsin for a four and two consecutive sixes before being dismissed for 83 runs, leaving MI at 143/1.
Rohit continued to score freely against the LSG bowlers until he was caught off M Siddharth's bowling for 84 runs, bringing MI to 177/2.
Tilak Varma was dismissed shortly after, leaving MI at 189/3. Naman Dhir and Suryakumar Yadav then took MI past the 200-run mark, but Surya fell for 12 runs, leaving MI at 213/4.
Ultimately, MI completed their chase at 229/4 in 18 overs, with Naman (23*) and Will Jacks (10*) remaining not out.
Earlier, LSG had a strong start, with Pooran's explosive innings and contributions from Himmat Singh and Aiden Markram, leading to a total of 228/5 in their 20 overs.
Pooran's innings included eight sixes, while Singh and Markram provided crucial support towards the end.
Despite a strong start, MI managed to restrict LSG in the final overs, conceding only 22 runs in the last three overs.
LSG's innings began with a quick pace, despite losing Josh Inglis early. Marsh and Pooran quickly took control, with Marsh hitting Bumrah for multiple boundaries.
After the powerplay, Pooran reached his fifty in just 16 balls, but soon after, Corbin Bosch struck, dismissing both Pooran and Marsh in quick succession.
Captain Rishabh Pant's struggles continued as he was dismissed for just 15 runs, leading to Akshat Raghuwanshi's brief but impactful innings.
Himmat Singh and Aiden Markram then steadied the innings, putting together a 68-run partnership for the fifth wicket, finishing with LSG at 228/5.
For MI, Corbin Bosch took two wickets, while Raghu Sharma, Will Jacks, and AM Ghazanfar each claimed one wicket.
