Mumbai Indians Secure Historic Win Against KKR
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], March 30: In a thrilling start to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, the Mumbai Indians (MI) achieved a remarkable six-wicket victory over the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). This match marked MI's first season opener win since 2012 and their largest successful run chase in IPL history.
Facing a daunting target of 221 runs, Mumbai's batting lineup rose to the occasion, with openers Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton leading the charge. Rohit scored 78 runs off 38 balls, while Rickelton contributed 81 runs off 41 balls, propelling MI to a stunning 135 runs without loss in just 11 overs.
Both players reached their half-centuries in rapid succession, with Rickelton achieving his in just 24 balls, shortly after Rohit, who completed his fifty in 23 balls. Although Rohit was dismissed by Vaibhav Arora, he had already laid a solid foundation for the chase.
KKR attempted to mount a comeback when Kartik Tyagi took the wicket of Suryakumar Yadav (16), and Rickelton was run out for 81. However, with the required run rate well in hand, captain Hardik Pandya and Naman Dhir guided MI to victory in 19.1 overs.
Earlier, KKR had set a formidable total of 220/4 after being invited to bat first. Captain Ajinkya Rahane led the charge with a brilliant half-century, supported by significant contributions from Finn Allen and Rinku Singh. Despite Shardul Thakur's impressive three-wicket haul, KKR's aggressive batting put them in a strong position.
KKR started strong, reaching 31/0 in the first three overs. In the fourth over, Rahane and Allen combined to score 25 runs off Hardik Pandya, pushing KKR past the 50-run mark. This was one of the highest runs conceded by Pandya in an over in IPL history.
Shardul Thakur provided MI with a crucial breakthrough by dismissing Finn Allen, who scored 37 runs off just 17 balls. At the end of the powerplay, KKR stood at 78/1.
Rahane reached his fifty in just 27 balls, and KKR continued to build their score, reaching 120/2 after 10 overs. Thakur claimed his third wicket by dismissing Rahane, who scored 67 runs off 40 balls, including three fours and five sixes.
In the following overs, Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Rinku Singh added 17 runs against Ghazanfar, taking KKR to 167/3 after 15 overs. The duo continued to score freely, pushing the total to 199/3 after 18 overs.
Pandya eventually dismissed Raghuvanshi for 51 runs off 29 balls, but KKR finished strong at 220/4, with Rinku Singh remaining not out on 33 runs off 21 balls. Shardul Thakur's performance was a highlight for MI, as he took three wickets for 39 runs.
