Mumbai Indians Shine in IPL 2026 Opener
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], March 30: Shardul Thakur expressed his joy following an outstanding display for the Mumbai Indians (MI), emphasizing that representing his home team is a unique experience. He reflected on the challenges and cherished memories tied to the renowned Wankhede Stadium.
The five-time champions, MI, achieved a remarkable six-wicket victory against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their opening match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. With contributions from Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma, Mumbai accomplished their largest run-chase in IPL history, marking their first season-opening win since 2012. They successfully chased down a daunting target of 221 runs to defeat KKR in the second match of IPL 2026.
Thakur, who earned the Player of the Match title for his exceptional bowling, noted that delivering the sixth over was particularly challenging but pivotal for his performance. “I enjoy challenges. Bowling that sixth over was tough. Today was one of those standout performances,” he remarked post-match.
The right-arm pacer also shared his emotional ties to the venue, reminiscing about both the highs and lows he has experienced over the years. “This ground has given me both bitter and sweet memories. Playing for Mumbai is special. I was a net bowler back in 2010, and now I’m finally playing for the Mumbai Indians, my home team,” Thakur added.
Emphasizing the importance of team support, Thakur acknowledged the management's unwavering backing. “I would be thrilled to remain here. The support from the management is incredible,” he stated.
Thakur also addressed the popular “Lord Thakur” memes circulating on social media, embracing the nickname positively. “I appreciate it; it’s a name given by the fans. It’s not just a meme name, but a positive recognition. When you perform, people show their love,” he commented.
KKR, the three-time champions, showcased a strong batting display against MI, setting a challenging total of 220/4 after being invited to bat first.
