Mumbai Indians Suffer Heavy Defeat Against Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026
Mumbai Indians' Struggles in IPL 2026 Clash
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], April 24: Hardik Pandya, the captain of Mumbai Indians (MI), acknowledged that his team struggled to recover from early setbacks during their significant 103-run loss to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL 2026 'El Clasico' at Wankhede Stadium on Thursday night.
In his post-match comments, Pandya noted that losing wickets early in the powerplay put MI at a disadvantage while attempting to chase a daunting target of 208 runs.
"Losing an early wicket in the powerplay is always challenging. It puts you on the back foot, and we couldn't manage to recover from that," Pandya explained.
When asked if the pitch conditions changed during their innings, the MI skipper refuted the idea, attributing the defeat to CSK's strong batting display.
"I wouldn't say that. They played exceptionally well and scored 207 runs. The pitch was the same; we just needed to perform better with the bat," he remarked.
Pandya recognized the effectiveness of CSK's spinners but highlighted the depth in their batting lineup, particularly praising Sanju Samson's remarkable century. "Our spinners bowled well, but Sanju's innings was outstanding. Their batters consistently contributed, leading to a formidable total," he stated.
He emphasized the necessity for MI to have a solid start in the powerplay to remain competitive in the chase. "To chase this down, we needed a strong powerplay, and we couldn't achieve that," Pandya added.
Regarding potential squad changes for future matches, the MI captain mentioned that discussions would be held within the team. "We will have conversations about how to move forward and what adjustments we need to make. We have a few days to assess our options," he concluded.
CSK's impressive victory was fueled by Samson's century and a stellar bowling performance led by Akeal Hosein, who took four wickets for just 17 runs. CSK set a commanding total of 207/6, while MI was bowled out for a mere 104 runs.
This win not only propelled CSK to fifth place in the IPL 2026 standings but also marked their largest victory margin in IPL history, surpassing their previous record of a 97-run win against Kings XI Punjab in 2015.
For MI, this defeat represents their most significant loss by runs in IPL history, eclipsing their previous record of an 87-run defeat to Rajasthan Royals in 2013. Additionally, it became their largest loss at Wankhede Stadium, surpassing a 39-run defeat to Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2015.
The total of 104 all out is now MI's lowest score against CSK in IPL history, falling short of their previous low of 136/8 in the 2021 season. CSK has now triumphed in five of the last six encounters against MI since 2023.
