Mumbai Indians Face Setback Against Gujarat Titans

Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], March 30: After suffering a defeat against the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik Pandya expressed that his team fell short by approximately 15-20 runs in both their batting and bowling performances, particularly struggling with slower deliveries on a challenging pitch.

Hardik's difficulties as MI's captain continued into the second season, as his first match back after a slow-over-rate suspension resulted in a 36-run defeat to his previous team, GT, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Although MI managed to restrict GT to 196 runs with a strong finish in the death overs, their batting faltered in the final stages of their innings.

In the post-match presentation, Hardik remarked, “It’s tough to piece it all together; I believe we were 15-20 runs short in both batting and bowling. We made fundamental mistakes in the field, which cost us an additional 20-25 runs, and in a T20 match, that’s significant. The GT openers played exceptionally well, taking calculated risks and accumulating runs without playing overly aggressive shots. We’ve been playing catch-up since then. It’s early in the season, and we all need to step up; the batters must deliver soon. On this pitch, the slower deliveries were particularly challenging, with some balls bouncing and others shooting up, making it tough for the batters. The GT bowlers executed their plans effectively, similar to what I aimed to do with the ball.”

During the match, MI won the toss and chose to bowl first. GT's openers, Shubman Gill (38 off 27 balls, including four boundaries and a six) and Sai Sudarshan, provided a solid start with a partnership of 78 runs. Another significant partnership developed between Sudarshan and Jos Buttler (39 off 24 balls, with five fours and a six). Sudarshan scored a commendable 63 runs off 41 balls, hitting four boundaries and two sixes. Despite a mini-collapse towards the end, GT finished their innings at 196/8.

Hardik Pandya (2/29) was MI's standout bowler, while Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar, Mujeeb ur Rahman, and Satyanarayana Raju each claimed a wicket.

In their chase of 197 runs, MI lost early wickets, including Rohit Sharma (8) and Ryan Rickelton. However, Tilak Varma (39 off 36 balls, with three fours and a six) and Suryakumar Yadav (48 off 28 balls, with one four and four sixes) formed a 62-run partnership. After their dismissals, MI struggled and ended their innings at 160/6.

Prasidh Krishna (2/18) and Mohammed Siraj (2/34) were the leading bowlers for GT, with Kagiso Rabada and Sai Kishore also contributing with a wicket each.
