Mumbai Indians Set Sights on Sixth IPL Title Ahead of 2026 Season
Mumbai Indians Gear Up for IPL 2026
As the 19th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) approaches, the senior players of Mumbai Indians, including Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya, conveyed an inspiring message to their supporters during an event held on March 21. They expressed their determination to secure the franchise's sixth IPL title, a feat they haven't achieved since 2020. Under Rohit's captaincy, MI clinched their first title in 2013, making a remarkable comeback mid-season. They replicated this success in 2015 by defeating Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the final, and again in 2017 against Rising Pune Supergiant in a thrilling match.

After a disappointing exit in the league stage of IPL 2018, MI rebounded in 2019, overcoming CSK in the final to secure their fourth title. In 2020, they became the second team, following CSK, to win consecutive IPL championships. However, their performance declined over the next three seasons, prompting management to make significant changes, including bringing back Pandya from Gujarat Titans (GT) and appointing him as captain, while Rohit was relieved of his duties despite being the captain of the Indian national team in all formats.
Hardik Pandya's Leadership Journey
Pandya found success as the captain of GT, leading them to a title victory in their inaugural season. However, in IPL 2023, GT fell short in the final against CSK. Unfortunately, Pandya's tenure at MI did not mirror his previous success, as the five-time champions struggled and finished last in the league with only four wins. In IPL 2025, MI showed improvement by qualifying for the playoffs and defeating Gujarat Titans in the eliminator, but they were ultimately eliminated by Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the second qualifier. As IPL 2026 approaches, Pandya faces the challenge of leading a team that includes Suryakumar, who recently captained India to a World Cup victory in 2026.
