Mumbai Indians Keep Playoff Hopes Alive with Victory Over Lucknow Super Giants
Mumbai Indians Secure Crucial Win
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India] - On May 5, the Mumbai Indians (MI) triumphed over the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in an IPL 2026 match, winning by six wickets at their home ground in Mumbai. This victory is vital for MI as they strive to maintain their playoff aspirations.
The five-time champions are now just one loss away from being eliminated from the tournament, and a significant concern is the underwhelming performance of Jasprit Bumrah.
Bumrah has managed to secure only three wickets throughout the season, participating in all ten matches. His economy rate stands at 8.89, with a disappointing average of 109.67.
During a discussion on Star Sports' 'Amul Cricket Live', former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar addressed Bumrah's ongoing struggles with his bowling rhythm.
Gavaskar noted, “Bumrah is putting in his best effort, but he appears to be experimenting too much. He did take a wicket after the strategic timeout, but it was ruled a no-ball. He has also bowled several no-balls. While he is creating opportunities for wickets, luck has not favored him. His pace seems to have decreased, and his usual slower ball length has become fuller. The line that previously targeted the stumps is now drifting towards the leg stump.”
He further commented, “Bumrah is not typically known for bowling no-balls, yet he has already bowled six or seven this season. His attempts to bowl fuller lengths have not yielded results. He is complicating his approach, which is detrimental. Returning to his fundamentals and sticking to what works best for him is essential. Trying new techniques is disrupting his rhythm, and luck is not on his side. It may take just one or two matches for him to regain his form. Once he starts taking wickets, he will find his stride again. However, he needs to simplify his bowling and avoid overthinking.”
In the match itself, MI chose to bowl first. Contributions from Nicholas Pooran (63 runs off 21 balls, including four fours and eight sixes), Mitchell Marsh (44 runs off 25 balls, with six fours and three sixes), and Himmat Singh (40 not out off 31 balls, with two fours and two sixes) propelled LSG to a total of 228/5.
Nevertheless, a remarkable partnership of 143 runs between Ryan Rickelton (83 runs off 32 balls, featuring six fours and eight sixes) and Rohit Sharma (84 runs off 44 balls, with six fours and seven sixes) enabled MI to chase down the target comfortably in just 18.4 overs.
Currently, MI sits in ninth place with three wins and seven losses, while LSG is at the bottom of the table with two wins and seven losses.
